Please help us out. The national forest service in Montana got a new administration. The 5 district rangers for the south west region of Montana have a combined 9 years expierence. They came up with a plan to shut down all backcountry skiing, ice climbing, and snowmobiling on national forest which include hylite canyon south of bozeman, rockcreek south of livingston, farry lake Bridgers, and cottonwood creek in the crazys. This is unacceptable to the skiing community here in Montana. Check out http://citizensforbalanceduse.com for more info
please encourage people to attened the rally at the gallitin county court house Bozeman. 12pm-2pm on 12/11/04 thanks

why did they come up with the plan? your not giving us the whole story. give me a web site, and then maybe ill support you. sleds suck anyway. for every 24 hours of operation, they pollute as much greenhouse gas as a car does in 100,000 miles of use. no, that number is correct. this statistic came from the people doing an independant study of the sledders in yellowstone park

statistics are easily manipulated for one's causes. I'm not a snowmobiler, but I scoffed at the plans some Seirra Club people showed our gov't class in high school for these 24 person snowmobiles ran by the park. They're supposed to be as enjoyable as riding a snowmobile. It's nice that people from New York move here so they can preserve our land for us, since we are a bunch of incompetent mountain dwellers.

What you are telling me is almost inconceivable, becuase If you cant hike, ski or climb the mountains in the winter, what good are they? It makes no sense that peopel would shut down the mountains for the only things they are used for.

no shit, sleds are cool and all for bc access, but they really aren't neccessary. The only peeps that ride them are fatasses, who are to lazy to ski or hike for themselves. pollute way to much and are way to noizy

get your facts right. this crowd is merciless, as i know from past experience. i agree with conceptkid completely, if your going into the bc, at least hike. you can buy a car, skis, and a pair of snowshoes for the price of a sled, so do ti the right way

quit bein such a leaf licker guddgulf, im with the artist on this one by far, i just snowmobiled ferrylake today and it was really one of the most enjoyable experiences i have had in a long long time, what the fuck good is it in the winter if you cant sled to it? its certainly not worth the 7 mile hike there and back from the parking area. people are such assholes

yeah well its not always possible to be a leaf licker pal....A couple of my friends and I tried to ski Meenie and Mo in the Absarokas day before yesterday, 90lbs packs for about 9 miles in half of it in about knee deep pow, camp for the night(snows 6inches and like below zero, try to get up Mount Cowen(thats where meenie and mo are) are get to the top, thats another 3 miles w/ all ski gear and its blowin like a mofo, and we find that everysingle northern facing aspect was rather unstable and had to climb out, built a back country kicker and hit that at the base for a couple hours, camped, then hiked out in the mornin. That would own your scrawny ass, it owned mine and what do I have to show for it, not a thing. I wanna snow mobile.

This doesn't really have much to do with snowmobile access- what it has to do with is access in general. I'm unfamiliar with the Bridgers access, but I know for a fact that the Forest Circus is considering closing the gate up to Hyalite Canyon, which would effectively end all ice climbing and backcountry skiing unless you wanted to skin or walk a LONG way (provided you don't own a sled, which the majority of Montanans don't). On the other hand, they're also considering plowing the Hyalite road all the way up to the Chisholm campground (if I'm correct on that one- the campground past the dam), which would allow for a great deal of access in the winter. It's still up in the air, but it'd be nice to make your voice known...I've got the website for this issue floating around here somewhere, I'll try to post it soon.

so you want a dude to get a pair of snowshoes and walk his ass the 7 miles back to fairy lake and then like another two up that steep ass bowl? and then walk 7 miles out? probably not happening, its doesnt make much sense at fairy lake to close it, there are certainly many more cars traveling up there in the summer than snowmobiles in the winter, and maybe sleds do put out more exhaust, but im sure then numbers crunch out to be the same or work out in the sleds favor. and that would just suck if they completely closed off the whole access year round, there are ALOT of people out there not capable of making the 14 mile roundtrip hike it would take to get to see the lake. This is kind of a wierd point but, how about the veteran who kept this country safe so we could walk and talk as we please, and lost his leg in the course of duty, should he not be able to see natures beauty? after all he made it possible in a round about way for all of us to see it. its just doesnt make alot of sense to me to close off the access especially in the winter, there is hardly any damage done to any ground by a sled

besides, think about how many people go back country with sleds anyway, its not like an astronomical amount, compared to something like cars they may put out more exhaust but there are like hardly any out there really. Well you could still drive the 7 miles to fairly lake I think but couldn't take snow mobiles any further then the road, but I may be mistaken

The Fairy Lake access isn't being affected, is it? Fuck...even so, it's usually a nice little haul up there past January.
And GotamaBC- 90 lb pound packs up to Cowan? Damn, boy! Are you for real?

Yeah dude we were gunna stay out for 3 nights the packs were just to elbow lake, then we dropped them for like a base camp, but it was actually 85 pounds when I weighed it when I got back but thats with a wet sleepin bag and stuff so more like 75-80 90 just had more effect but yeah it was an ass kicker, and its wilderness anyway so you couldn't take anything up there for transportation

Ahh, gotcha. That still seems heavy for just three days out.
Any plans to head back up there soon? How about the skiing up on Black Mountain, in the Pine Creek area? I was looking at the Y-Couloirs, looks like those might induce some thought provoking riding.

Yeah I looked at those actually too they looked awesome, especially the one on the skiiers right but I don't know if I could even ride it I've heard that there is usually like and ice field thing like halfway down it, but we were actually planning on going there but changed our minds since moe people usually go up there and we felt cooler goin somewhere more remote.
