and by lame graphics under the base, I meant LAY graphics under the base.

Will have it screen printed on a thin sheet of plastic or something.


Also, I thought of this (in case this explodes, and I start the next LINE and make millions)....

Make a ski like this, that the purchaser can create their own custom graphics.

I realize it would be pricey, but if the ski could be made cheap enough (in price, not quality) the graphics could be printed and laid under the base.

huh, you know you guys are totally right, I hadn't even thought of that. I will start looking into patents now. Stop the helping company from screwing me (cause watch, that'll happen, the man will take my idea and RUN).

Kevin, thats kinda what I was thinking, instead of screen printing, just doing a straight print onto some thin plastic. I'll go to some kind of print shop for mine (if I do get a clear base). So the purchaser would just submit their design as a huge image file or something, and the manufacturer would have to have printing capabilities. It would be WAY too much work to screen print each design.

Well, maybe, but believe me rowen, I will NOT be selling these cheap.

$600?

These are kind of an exclusive thing, you know? That's why I kinda didn't want to tell many people at first, cause this is kinda like my thing, you know?

So we'll see. I plan on making 4 skis at first, so that I have a better chance of getting a good pair out of the 4 (as advised by my friend at said ski company).

If they all turn out great, MAYBE I'll sell the remaining pair. But most likely not, I will probably keep them as back-ups in case something goes wrong.

Unless the price is right, but knowing you Rowen, the price won't be right.

It also depends on the overall cost, these will be cheap, but Carbon Fiber is still very pricey (100x more than fiberglass about) so we shall see.

I would part with a pair for $600 though.

man, patents are expensive. I'll call up my buddies dad, who's a lawyer and does that kind of stuff, see what he says.

Also, I just had a stroke of genius, that COMPLETELY changes my design. Um, much more chance of screwing up, but it would really be incredible. Kevin, I will talk to you about this tonight, and see what you think. Its pretty crazy, pretty crazy cool. It would solve many problems, while creating others. But in its complexity, I think it might be a simpler way to go.

This new revelation will remain of utmost confidentiality for now. Deep in the heart of.... I need a name.

Twizzstyle Skis? Twizzstyle FiberWorks? Twizzstyle Fibers?

Somebody come up with a cool name for me, not for the ski, thats already been chosen, a name for my 'company'

Oh yeah, I doubt the company would screw you over, cuz they would be in lawsuit city if they did, expecially if you have proof that YOU came up with the ideas before they did.

No, I am getting the materials free, and in return I will helping out with some packaging for them, plus they will get a copy of my report (so I gotta make a good one I guess!)

Got my first shipment of carbon fiber today, just a small piece (12in x 60in) to play around with, its not long enough for skis. I'm just gonna make small parts, like a cell phone cover, crap like that. Its SOOO fucking cool though, I want to make a blanket out of and sleep in it! Its so soft!!! But its fraying like a bitch.

yeah, even if these don't turn out skiable, I'll still be proud that I even took on this kind of venture, I'll be learning a lot.

I also think, just for fun, I might do something to my 1260s, me and kevin were just talking about this. I might put a layer of carbon fiber over the topsheet. Mostly just for looks, but it will stiffen the noodly 1260s.

alright, so just now at work, I brought in two small strands of carbon fiber that frayed off of my big piece.

They were each about 2-4 mm wide and a foot long. Its a lot like gift wrapping ribbons, feels and looks VERY similar, and the ends fray the same way.

So I took those two pieces, cut them into smaller sections, and wove my own small piece (only about an inch square).

So I just did my very first carbon fiber layup! Aww, how cute! I bent it over the corner of a tape dispenser (just for some kind of shape) and I'll see what its like when its all setup. Most composite materials compose of a fiber and a binding agent.... so what was my binder just now?

why Elmer's Glue of course!!!

so what will you just lay the layer of carbonfiber over the top sheet and just paint the resin over the ski/topsheet? (on your 1260's)

yeah tyler, thats exactly what I was thinking. Just epoxy the carbon straight on top, and put a nice thick layer on top to protect the carbon fiber.

And yes, as kevin said, this new idea will be kept to ourselves.

do the 1260 idea its fucking sick, if that works it would be a nice alternaite if your top sheet is going to shit and you just wanted some added protection. even thats is a marketible thing right there. also how does it law when you paint epoxy on it by hand vs it being layed in a form? does it come out as smooth and you better find out if the epoxy can flex with the ski when cold.

i dunno, haha.

Epoxy is pretty flexible, even when cold (it does break, but you have to bend it a lot).

Tyler, a mold will be best, but way too much work. Epoxy smooths out pretty good on its own. I just gotta use a squeegee to get it as smooth as possible, and it'll smooth out ok. I could sand and polish it too.

Mmmk, a guy from Gnu (engineer) came into the shop today, and started talkin to us, and I noticed he had some carbon fiber bindings, I asked him how much carbon fiber he uses in the boards, and he said, 'as little as possible' apparently, companys like burton and ride, will advertise their boards as 'carbon fiber' but only put afew strands in, because yes carbon fiber is strong and light, but that is its weakness, is it is light... and when bend, it snaps back into place extremely fast. So on snowboards, carbon fiber really really sucks, because you'll be bouncing all over the mountain. But on the libtech skateboards, they love to use carbon fiber because it gives them the most pop out of any other material. He also mentioned a major snowboard or ski brand hasn't made a complete carbon fiber board since 1985.

So I asked him whats new with his boards, and his reply was, 'Basalt' Look it up, I think someone from WSU back in 1930 did a lab write up of it, but supposedly it WILL be the new up and coming material, the only problem is Russia is the only producer because of all the left over material from the cold war, so its kinda hard to acquire.

I know of TWO ski companies that make carbon fiber skis. Goode, and that other one that has a carbon fiber core. Those are like handbuilt in Switzerland I think.


And I'll get off my ass when I feel like it, kind of in a grudge right now, you know?

I should have been more specific, the besalt has been broken down and woven exactly like carbon, so yes, it is just volcanic rock, but it is in a different form, thats why it comes from russia

huh, interesting.

The carbon fiber should be fine though, I'm only doing one layer, and it really isn't much different than fiberglass.

So I've finally got a 1:1 scale plot of the skis out, and they're a little frightening.

I knew they would be, but just having this rolled up in my room is gonna give me nightmares. They are fucking HUGE.

130mm doesn't sound too big until you actually see it. These things are MONSTERS

yes, I am now officially building the skis.

It has costed a lot more than I intended. Here is a cost breakdown so far:

(all prices are approximate, its probably more)

carbon fiber - $30
fiberglass, mylar, resin, mixing supplies - $40
aluminum tubing and threaded rods - $30
core wood - $20
press wood - $20

Theres other stuff, can't remember. I've probably spent around $200 or more so far.

Base material was free, edges were free, sidewalls were free.

Here's a few pictures from tonight to show my progress:

Yeah those looks sweet, now that I see a picture of them though, they don't look a whole lot wider then my BC's... after some checking BC's are 122-90-115.

these are bigger than your BC's. These are 130/100/120........ or is it 110 at the waist? I don't remember, they're fat.

Yes, they are 170, I am about 5'5' or so.
