okay, just a light and physics thing that is annoying me because i cant figure it out
ok, i know it is impossible for anything to accelerate to the speed of light because it will become infinite in mass and all
but if something does travel at or above the speed of light (except for light), then would you be able to see it?
and no gay or deadshit answers please

what i don't understand is - when superman orbits around the earth to make it spin the opposite direction, why does that make time go backwards?

and if at the speed of light time stops can you still move and think and shit if you go the speed of light?

time doesnt actually stop
what happens is that since you are going faster than light, it appears that you go back in time, because you can see things that already happened.
eg. stand on one hill and wave, then go faster than the light you reflect in waving, to another hill, and you can see yourself wave, because you got to the other hill before the light did
the actual physical object wouldnt be there still, just the light that came off it

But that's all according to conventional physics... researchers are now moving objects at FASTER than the speed of light, and no mass is becoming infinite or anything. There's a lot of re-writing going down in the old 'Laws of Nature' book... dealing with the speed of light and the relationships of mass, etc. (the dark matter controversy)

the sonic boom is created because as you keep going faster the sound waves you are creating in front of you eventually get closer and closer togeather (or you are catching up to them while still sendind more out - if you want to look at it that way), eventually just before you 'break through' there is a big invisable wall of sound waves. (when they first tried to break the sound barrier they would get almost to the speed of sound than the plane would just stop accelerating or crash because the plane wasn't strong enough to break through this wall - but when you do break through the sonic boom is the sound of you breaking the wall of sound waves that you created in front of you.

in the movies they usually show a flash of light when something goes warp speed - but that's also only movies, so i don't know.

ya their is this scientist that's been sending Radiowaves faster then the speed of light, but i don't think that scientists have sent anything physical faster then the speed of light(i'm not sure i may have heard about somebody sending protons faster then the speed of light). But there is a neat concept for time travel. you have to get a worm hole, open it up (which we may never be able to do seeing as how it requires massive antimater deposits to open one) and spin off at the speed of light for twenty years or so, then bring it back and step through it and you should be 20 years in the past. Now conventional physics say that the wormhole would blow up when you brought it back and destroy lots of stuff, but it would no longer be following the rules of conventional physicis so they don't know(this theory of time travel also explains why we don't see future people walking around us doing tours and stuff).

I would presume that by travelling faster than the speed of light, things in front of you would appear to be happening over twice as fast, and things behind you would appear to be going in reverse. The whole concept is screwed though because you would never be able to see far enough away to actually realize it! You'd have to have a video recorder sending a signal into outer space, then have a TV in your space ship that's travelling faster than light away from the recorder. Theoretically, the signal would be playing in reverse.

Also, if you were to sneak up to someone at the speed of light and punch them in the face, yes, you would be invisible until the point of contact. He wouldn't have a chance! Now get this; you would also appear to have dissappeared to anyone behind you at the time you hit light speed!

No there has never been an object accelerated to or faster than the speed of light. As far as we know, it is still impossible. BUT it is proven that time does slow down the faster you go. Researchers have put an atomic clock in an SR71 and flown it around the earth a few times and when it landed, the atomic clock was just a few tiny moments behind what the rest of the earth's time was, so time did slow, just very tiny amounts. Also, faster than light does not involved any time TRAVEL, that is only possible through the forced destruction of the space and time fabric. Time travel is physically possible as proved by the Einstein-Rosen bridge, created by the man himself Eistein. Basically, you need 2 magnets with the size and power of a major star. You fill the magnets with as much energy as a large star and then simultaneously activate them. The sheer attraction between the two will create an instant gap between them, defying space and time. Thus, you are able to transfer from one point in space to the other intantaneously. The problem is keeping the bridge open and this would be accomplished using anti-matter. Anti-matter can be theoretically created by pushing two magnets together with infinite force. The photons of light trapped between the two would be pushed to their limit until they begin to blink in a out of existance under the immense pressure. This is theoretically anti-matter. When the bridge opens, anti-matter needs to be pushed into the opening, creating an opposing force to the mass attraction caused by the opposing walls of the bridge. This is all physically possible but not feasable. Yeah, college has taught me something at least besides how to obtain the greenest bud:)

By the way, Natedawg, even if you were traveling slightly UNDER the speed of light, no one would be able to see you anyway. :)
It's not a matter of outrunning light, specifically speaking, because you would still be 'running' into light that comes in front of you, and from the side; but light coming from a source directly behind you would never reach you.

Another thing- Although time may be dependent on speed, I don't think it's necessarily dependent on the speed of light... because while light defines the ability of perception, it does not necessarily define time.

God this stuff is crazy though, think about it... so when you drive to see a friend (who is staying in the same place, not moving) when you arrive, you are actually slightly ahead in time? How can people in two different times coexist in the same time, or dimension? Do you create a new dimension every time you move?

I'm gonna go smoke a bowl right now.

oh, and one more thing
in case you havent heard, some of us australians have discovered that the speed of light is slowing down. when the univers began (big bang theory or whatever), the speed of light was significantly faster than it is now. of course, i dotn know how rapidly it is slowing down, but it is.
well that just proves that us aussies are good for things other than that big rock in the middle of our country, o and other than the crocodile movies

Kamikazee: Travelling slower than the speed of light, since the light from behind would hit you at such a slow speed, it would take a long time for it to get back to it's source, but you would still be visible eventually. It would just be delayed. However, travelling at the speed of light, there would be no way the light could be reflected, only stopped, therefore you would be invisible to those behind you.

I know what you're saying about running into light, but if you were travelling faster than the limit that light can travel, you would be invisible until slightly after you reach the target. I think you would also appear to be moving backwards to the target as the light reflected would be received in reverse (the light from far away would still be catching up because you're travelling faster than it)... Ow, my brain hurts.

This is all in theory of course... What I just said may be the reason it is thought that it is impossible to move faster than the speed of light (being infinate in mass). I don't know...

i would like to add some intelligent remark to this discussion, but my copy of 'a brief history of time' is still gathering dust on my bedroom floor seriously.

on another note, you guys are looking at this from the physics student perspective, myself, being an arts student is going to add the thought that although at the present time, nothing is faster than light, there is almost indefinitely something in our universe that will be discoverd to be.
