looting vs stealing

i'm just wondering - what's the legal difference between looting and stealing. like, if you get arrested 'looting' will you get off a little easier than if you are arrested for 'stealing'.

just wondering is all.

i think looting is like when there's a mob of people breaking into the place (like the LA riots or something) and making out with all kinds of shit, while stealing is only a few people or one person taking a few things. i'm probably completely wrong, but it makes sense to me

I also agree. Looting seems like a crime of mass stealing.

I think Looting is more fun. During a riot or something. Looting requires less thought.

I think in that case then Loot means take all that is valuable. Let me consult a dictionary.

Loot - v. Steal goods from, especially during a war or right. > Steal goods.

Steal - v. Take (something) without permission or legal right and without intending to return it.

I don't think that looting, specifically speaking, is a crime. But if it is, then it would only be charged against a whole bunch of people who did it during a fire or something... and I can see why they might give it a slightly lighter sentence. More people to throw in jail...

why do you ask? Is there a large natural disaster in your area?
