Replying to JoeyRacer1 vs Stevens Pass- The whole story.
Aight everyone. Here's the story (as accurate as I can get without having everyone here to type this with me).
The Waterfall was closed due to speed issues and injuries the day before, continuing speed issues, and issues the ski area has to deal with that most people are not aware of or never think about. Due to the nature (large size and location) of the jump most of us were having to start at the first big kicker in the upper park or at the top of the Winnies to get speed. This was a 'make it or pay/big boy' jump....not something to mess around with. 75 ft back from the knuckle, 29 degrees at the top of the takeoff, and put you about 30ft above the deck.
Also, due to the fact that it was a weekend there was a lot more traffic on the hill. Therefore, more people were crossing the inrun, milling around the table and landing, and crowding the whole process in general. So the mgt and park crew decided it was best to keep the jump closed. I wanted to hit the jump bad but would have done the same thing in their position.
A number of the park crew (3-4 I believe) were working on the Hip Jump when Joe Ulman 'hit' the jump with total disregard for the fact that there were workers on the jump. They said he more or less just rode up the take-off and rolled over it to the landing with little to no air. As harmless as that may seem, when the crew is working on a feature you stay off of it. As he rode through he yelled at them to 'Open the fucking waterfall' and called them assholes or pussies...maybe both...not 100% sure.
He changed clothes in order to hide and it's prolly a good thing he did. Everyone heard about it pretty fast and there were a lot of people looking for him. During this time he ran away from a 14 year old who was chasing him...yet he claims that when he was finally caught he could have taken any one of his pursuers in a 1 on 1 fight. Not likely...the security guys are burly and I'd say it's safe to say that they have more fighting experience than Joe....who is in the 16-18 range I believe.
At one point (not sure when) he even mooned some of the crew and a group of their friends....hence the talk of an Indecent Exposure charge. He also told them to tell the Park Crew to fuck off.
He changed clothes a second time (back to his original stuff he says) and kept skiing. I saw him and started to follow him. Again, he ran away....real tough guy. He ducked into the woods thinking he was outsmarting me so I followed his tracks a little and then headed to the bottom of Skyline cuz it was obvious he wasn't gonna quit skiing. I gave the lifties a description of his outfit and he came down right as I was getting on the chair. I yelled to the lifites who alerted the Park Crew and Security. Mike Thomas from the Park Crew came down and talked to him and told him that he had to give up his pass. Joe said he didn't have it with him (Mike then told him about the Theft of Services fine), told Mike that he was going to leave, and started hiking up to the upper parking lot. Mike let Security know what was going on and walked up the hill with Joe who kept saying that he was leaving and Mike didn't need to follow him. Security showed up (2 guys) and I think 1 other area official came up as well. They told him to stop but he ignored them and kept walking. I think one of them grabbed the tails of his skis and he tried to swing them at the guy......not sure about all the details here. Anyhow...the three of them ended up falling into a treewell during the scuffle (he didn't take the guy down or whatever he was claiming..one of the security guys ended up on top).
Joe was never assaulted by anyone, he instigated the entire thing through his actions, and he is now banned for 1 year. If he is caught within the ski area boundaries he goes to jail for trespassing.
As for all the smack Joe has been talking...here's the deal. Joe is an ex-racer and as far as I've seen is a good skier. However, he is not by any means a park skier of any noteworthy standing. He has little to no expertise when it comes to park skiing or any issue in the park...especially jump closures. Joe is known by most of us to talk and talk and talk like he knows a lot about things he knows nothing about. If he wanted to hit the Waterfall cuz it's such a good jump then why didn't he hit it when it was open the previous day? Maybe he did and I wasn't aware of it but nobody I've talked to saw him hit it. And I really don't think that he would have done anything other than straight-air it anyhow....without a grab.
So there you go. This is my official endorsment of the Blacklisting of Joe Ulman on behalf of the people who busted their asses all year to make the park great. Myself, my company, and my krew have no time for people who conduct themselves in this manner. The Park Crew and groomers have done an amazing job this year and without them there wouldn't have been any jumps period. So think about that Joe....you bit the hand that fed you. You made your bed. Now you get to sleep in it.
Breathe and Stop
YOU KNOW!!!
