Is buying a new pair of skis every year a waste?

I always have friends who go out every year to buy the newest pair of j skis just to sell them for less than half of what they paid after one year. Idk it just seems like a major waste of money and other than the design they are basically the same ski.

For awhile i had just one pair of skis but taking them to a shop for a few days for a tune was annoying. Now I have a few but dont plan to buy anymore for awhile. Skis last awhile. The thing that doesnt seem to last for me now are boots/liners. Really wish zipfits were in stock rn.

Definitely not a waste, but also not necessary. Some might like the feel of new skis at the start of the season, not having to worry as much about skis breaking or being compromised from wear. If a person feels like they're getting the value from their skis over the season, then it makes sense to sell them on, and the next owner can enjoy a good deal.
Personally I like to use tools I've gotten used to, so I use any equipment as long as I can and repair it if possible. That being said, I like to always have a new pair of skis on deck ready to go in case I break a pair.

really just depends on how much you ski

few days a year, might as well rent (or just keep a pair for a few years)

Totally depends. I don't buy a new pair every year, but most years. I got a park ski, a daily driver ski, a pow stick, and back country setup... So I'm only replacing each category every few years, unless I don't like the ski. I typically hold onto the binding for at least a couple pairs of skis, but even sell those before they become dated and hard to sell

I have around 15 ski's I've picked up over past 5-6 years. Probably 6 I didn't like and just sold to someone on here. Fun to try new skis, lot of times you can get them for cheap in the spring/summer sales. If you're paying peak season retail and buying pivots for 400+ then ya it's a waste

For me it’s like this:
seasons 1-2 nice new skis!!

seasons 3-4 man these skis are kinda beat to shit maybe I should get new ones??

season 5 + these skis are now a core part of my identity

bruh I am blowing up a pair of skis per year riding rails since I started. Yes my pow and carving skis last years and don't need replacing. New park skis about 1-1.5 seasons and the old park skis turn to street skis. remount bindings and rinse and repeat
