Box of different Wax - how to determine temp/type?

Found a box of wax from my racing days.

Most doesn't have any identifying characteristic other than color which IIRC varies on manufacturer.

Want to figure out what it is to use it instead of tossing it.

What's a good way to start figuring it out?

if you know the company of wax, look up their colors and determine if its floro or non, you could honestly cut a small sliver and press it on your iron on varying temps based off color of the wax. i.e. 120->130->140->etc. make sure it melts consistently and doesn't burn.

I've found that it does as I've had too warm/soft wax be grabby in really cold. Too hard is usually not a problem.

If you are worried about figuring out the hardness/temp of your wax I would use a scratch test on the wax. take a peice of metal, knife, pick, screwdriver and scratch your bar of wax. Should be pretty easy to feel the difference and you can sort by hardness.

and if you happen to have some fluoro when you melt on your iron it has a very distinct smell.

not that you should be inhaling fluoros or even using it. But it sure is nice to have some around for spring pond skim events and shit like that
