Yeah looks like the video player is not going full screen for vertical videos. This is basically something that will be fixed with the new site / retiring the current ns player.
It sounds like there's a display issue with the app. Try clearing the app cache or reinstalling it to see if that fixes the problem. If it persists, check for any app updates or report the issue to the app’s support team, as it might be a bug they need to address.

We're getting all the bug reporting and the development system set up right now for the big push forwards. This issue might not matter, but I'm using it as a test to see if my bug reporting form works. :). It'll be for staff/mods only right now because the last time we launched a public bug report form we just got bazillions of stupid posts in it.

Fuck, OK upon further investigation of this I don't think that its a player issue... the actual video is encoded that way. So the video seems to be displaying "Correctly" in terms of how it was encoded... as the video itself actually is a horizontal aspect ration after encoding.
I think I know what happened here - Recording vertical video used to be a massive fucking fail on Newschoolers... heck on the entire internet. You'd get roasted if you ever recorded something vertical. TikTok broke that mould in the popular mind and now people want their vertical videos to display vertically.
That may be why we haven't found the problem yet... we've been looking at the wrong problem. Video is displaying fine, but is being encoded wrong.
Yeah, look at this... that's why the thumbnail is so shitty, its zoom/cropping to the width of the video.
I might even remember deciding "fuck vertical videos" back in the day... has anyone ever in their mind actually seen a local Newschoolers video that worked vertical?
