There hasnt really been too many of recent memory. Usually when theres less open, you see em, but right now theirs basically none at vail and maybe like 3 at breck.
There’s a lot open at keystone. I seem to remember a lot more this time last time. Granted, it’s only my 2nd year skiing keystone.

Idk, not sure all the intricacies in all of these strikes but VR has done some shady stuff. Good the wage got raise to 20 baseline, but happy to see people fighting for workers rights. Hasn't been much of a thing in modern times and def not in the ski industry.
But it's expensive af to live in mountain town usa if you can even find a home. So many people living in cars or surfing couches.
The ski industry needs these people more than they need them. It's good to see some positive changes last few years after things got to a pretty depressing low.
Crested Butte Lift Maintenance is genuinely one of the nicest, most hard working groups of people I have ever met. All lift mechanics put up with alot but especially these poor guys

Get a yellow sign that says "SEND". Put it in woth a little lip in front. Have 2 people stand with yellow jackets on the sides and get a pic, clip or lil edit.

People are shocked when I tell them that I made $17/hr grooming in 2023. I was able to survive, but had no margin for emergencies. And doesn't count for the risk/responsibility of that job.

lift attendant job posting at purg from this morning is listed at BELOW the state minimum wage ($14.81 as of jan 1)

i worked lift maintenance at vail for a bit. watched like 100 combined years of experience walk out the door cause VR wouldn't even negotiate a raise. rest of the summer was a total shit show and i bailed pretty soon after that. rooting for these guys, if the pay ever comes close to being livable i'd love to get back into it
That's the minimum requirement for lifties anywhere. When I was young I asked a hill manager what the requirements are to be a lifty cause I was interested and he said "nothing, a monkey could do the job".

but since you asked, i interviewed for a role to be the GM of DMC. the office was 6x4 closet at the end of the changing room and he told me that i wouldn’t likely see old naked people. i asked if i could wear a hat and he laughed and said sometimes a cowboy hat. he also said that whatever the rich mountain club members want, i bend over backwards to get them it and alleviate their frustration because they are paying $10k annually to be a member. seemed to be 100% financially motivated and the role would have been to sell my soul it felt. and the leader was a total egotistical fuckhead coming over from telluride which he brought up like 7 times an hour. he called me like 4 or 5 times and i just never picked up.

I may have a little bit of a warped perspective because I'm most familiar with resorts like Purg, CB and Telluride......but isn't "100% financially motivated" like the grand tradition of ski resorts?

DMC is a scam though not wrong about that
i mean yeah the first rule of business is to stay in business lol. but i meant the director i would have reported to. seemed to lack empathy and only cared about the bottom line and not at all about employee experience. also, purgs infrastructure is dated as fuck. the perception i got was that a previous ownership was essentially using the resort to up the value of real estate the same way a neighborhood will have a golf course to raise property values. the resort was secondary to the operation and therefore fell behind. lastly, the current parent company for purg is mcp and one time i rode the gondola at keystone with the mcp ceo and he was just talking about how shitty it was to travel to ski towns that couldnt support the size of his private jet. its an 8 minute ride up and his ego made sure he flexed on us.

I made 14.25 in 2019. Was supposed to make 17 but snowmaking manager fucked uo my wage so I stayed at 13.50. 1,000 for rent, not going out ever, and still unable to buy groceries many times.
Absolutely wild. Wish covid didnt fuck things uo and I sued them for wage theft for taking lunch break out while we were working. Signed a document for it and still got our wages stolen.
Fuck that company. It's more manageable now but still

So worked gor vail in CO like 11 yeara agi and a few seasons at Northstar.
I watched them let people walk that had 10 years in a cat, knew the people the trails, our snowmaking system. Let them walk over a fucking dollar an hour.
In stupid fucks minds, they can hire a green op for less money and save. A good operator can do so much more in a night than a rookie. Knows what to look for and what to fux. Can actually deliver a $220 experience or at least on the skiing side.
They were paying lifties 12. Relying on j1s instead of paying locals. In the spring they had managers workint a 6th day to keep lofts runnint. So they paid several managers OT at a managers wage but couldnt pay lifties even another $1.
They fucking outsourced all their hr to both save money and make it extremely hard to report a workplace problem.

I mean there lind of isn't for a lot of roles. Def living around some young kids in ski school that clearly have wealthy ish parents.
But even with the wages finally going uoz resorts are hella short staffed in many departments.
When people freak out about strikes Im like fuck off. That's the only way to get anywhere with the vails of the world.
At least it's at a point where they need you more than you need them. Hoping they recognize that and step the pay up further. Hell even lifties at a lot of mtns are in short supply.
