bennwithtwonswas having this exact conversation at the hill the other day. homie said he'd always wanted to try a handplant, so he went for it on the QP and nailed it first try. every subsequent try was a poor imitation and 3 days later he was still trying to recapture the perfection of his first one.
my hypothesis is that when you've been thinking about a trick for a long time, you agonize about every detail, breaking it down until you've got it thoroughly resolved in your mind. then, when you go to do it the first time, you're incredibly focused on the movement and the timing, resulting in a very good first attempt. if you stomp it first try, all of this anticipation and worry and excitement kind of slide off, often accompanied by the thought 'wow, that was way easier than i expected' .. the problem is that the next time you try to do it, you aren't putting yourself into that safe frame of mind. rather, you just think 'oh yeah, i got this' and give it a marginal effort by comparison. it's almost like you feel as if it should just be a foregone conclusion that you know how to do this trick without a second thought.
so in conclusion, don't get complacent when learning tricks. you've gotta be obnoxiously deliberate until you hammer that bitch into your mind and body so hard that it can never be erased.
