Why so toxic?

Yo, why are some people on Newschoolers so toxic? Like, I get that everyone has opinions, but some dudes just hate for no reason. You post a vid of you hitting a new trick, and instead of hyping you up, they just talk trash. Or someone asks a legit question, and people just clown on them instead of helping. It’s mad annoying.

Skiing is supposed to be fun, right? We’re all out here trying to get better and enjoy the sport. But some people act like they’re the kings of freeskiing and anyone who isn’t throwing triples off a backcountry jump doesn’t belong. Like, chill. Not everyone is trying to be a pro.

I understand that joking around is part of the culture, and a little roasting can be funny. But some people take it way too far and just bring negative energy. Why does NS have so many people like that? A change in attitude would make it so much more inviting. This is based off of my experience, what do you all think?

90% of the people who are disrespectful don’t have an ig tagged or any way to know who they are. If you’re being disrespectful to other people on an anonymous profile you’re a pussy, don’t even worry about those dudes.

However, if you want my brutally honest opinion, I think the ski community is soft as fuck, its kind of pathetic. It seems like you aren’t allowed to have a real opinion or else people label you as a hater. IMO These dudes being dickheads in threads is the consequence of a particular demographic of ski culture fighting back against the toxic positivity mindset a lot of people have. Not everything is sick and awesome all the time, and thats okay. Unfortunately, these guys take it out on the wrong people because they are retarded but its whatever. Use it a life lesson and continue to post what you believe in and don’t let dickheads make you upset, but also don’t write off every negative comment as “hate”, because there might be some truth/value in what they are saying. Use it to strengthen yourself and refine your thought process.

I’ve seen like 4 posts/threads about people against hating on Newschoolers but I never even see the hate like I think Newschoolers is a pretty positive space in my experience. I’m not saying they’re aren’t outliers like skierman but he funny and chill vro.

Yeah definitely, I am for the most part referring to dudes who just leave the most utterly wasted comments on a basic question or statement. Especially when having the simple choice of saying something nice or not saying anything at all. But not everything should be seen as hate just like you say, I just think that there is somewhat of a line between critique and straight up hating one another.

In which case, its people who have been on NS for a while, who understand NS culture. And in NS culture, you can’t make 1000 repeat threads, you should use the searchbar, so they get hostile over it. Or are expected to know the axis of their trick because its usually pretty obvious.

It is super shitty for newcomers in that regard ngl. People that have used NS for a while know that its an easy karma farm to shit on someone who dropped a repeat thread so thats what they do.

In that sense I totally agree with OP. That kinda stuff pisses me off too

People on NS will just call you a dumbass.

On insta they will make an entire meme account indirectly attacking they type of person you are without attacking you directly and rack up a bunch of followers, so now you have no idea if hundreds of people are laughing at you or not.

Nah bro this site used to be so much worse lmao. I remember when every response to a thread was either mocking, sarcastic, or mean. Middle school me loved watching millennials roast each other but I’m glad to see how much more generally supportive todays ski community is compared to the one I grew up with. Is this a joke lol. Back in 2008 - 2014 there was hate / shit talking. That's also what made the site dope in certain ways as it made things competitive / raised the bar. Look at the Tanner VS. Simon pipe days and same thing with the 4BI9 vs Level 1 rivalry. Newschoolers in this day and age has very little hating and beef but look at the numbers compared to then. Would you rather have a video with 5 - 10K views with some hate comments or 1K views no one interaction. I think there needs to be a balance between hate and criticism but I personally would prefer something over nothing. These days this site is dead compared to 10 years ago.

I haven't been on newschoolers for very long, but personally I have only seen one person get hate for posting tricks/videos, and even then it was only a few people hating because they were posting like 5 videos a day. Honestly, it seems that 99% people get clowned for not using the search bar before posting.

I always try to help the new guys with questions but some people get tired of the same question over and over. As mentioned, some make some sarcastic comment to get upvotes. Some just troll for the sake of trolling.

However, I’ve got to say that the whole scene is wayyy more chill than it was when I was growing up. I remember going to some website (I forget the name) that had maps and stats of different parks. It was just filled with skiers and snowboarders arguing and challenging each other to fights. Newschoolers was a different ballgame then too.

You’ve got to realize that park skiing was the redheaded stepchild for quite awhile. I remember being a kid and I wasn’t allowed in the park with skis *snowboarders only*. Then snowboarding got into the Olympics before us. Almost 20 years before us. Not that that matters, but it does reflect societal views. So, for the longest time, park skiing had a certain chip on its shoulder because it fell between snowboarding, freestyle skiing (moguls), and normal skiing. Combine that with inadequate safety gear, undiagnosed concussions, a hard lifestyle with low pay… That all probably influenced a lot of these behaviors you see and perceive that developed from the park ecosystem.
