Snobbery in Park Skiing

Before I proceed this is just a discussion post not a hate thread, but I wanted to talk about the observation that snobbery in park skiing seems to be at an all time high and to be frank, it's pretty disappointing.

I grew up skateboarding primarily and in the 15+ years I did it, I probably only met a few people in the sport that were complete douchebags, one of which was an acclaimed friend of simon dumont's (shocker). That said, I always appreciated how chill the (majority) skateboarding community was.

However, as the last 10 years have passed it seems like there is a growing level of snobbery in freestyle skiing (especially from the rise of social media) so for 1. you're probably not as good as you think you are, so when some jerry comes asking for advice step off the high horse and be a decent person and idk maybe help em out or just be open to the fact that someone is interested in the space? 2. most of you would not be nearly as good as you are without mommy and daddy's money, again not hate, but that's just a fact - I am sure there are exceptions but I'd argue those people are outliers. AND #3 nobody really gives a fuck about how many swaps you can do on a rail or how many flips you can do in the air, is it sick as fuck to see someone who is an expert at their craft, yes, does it ruin it when you find out their pretentious assholes, also yes. Point is, chill out a little and instead of being a dick, just educate people who show interest, it's that simple.

Gonna go out on a limb and say most of you don't agree but I mean come on, I cannot be the only one seeing this.

I 100% agree with this. I went skiing with my friend earlier this season, and I was trying to get him into the park because he said he thought it looked fun. When we actually got there he was so scared that he was going to get made fun of that he made us leave, and we didn’t go back for the rest of the trip.

I heavily agree, it is so elitist at times. I grew u homeschooled and was endlessly snubbed, I would ride with the local crew and somehow - surprise, I was alone on a chair almost every time. I ended up not even bothering to ride with them, just with my few good friends. It is sad how being disinterested and snobby is seen as cool. I just posted in the "snow share worst finds" thread about how stupid that whole thing is just absolutely shredding people for overpricing gear. And of course the post got a bunch of downvotes. If people could just chill out it would be awesome.

100% agree with you but I’m afraid you’re on a website that encourages and perpetuates this behavior.

go to any thread where a beginner asks for advice and all you will see is name calling and purposely bad advice to purposely steer them in the wrong direction. it’s very sad because freestyle skiing is a minority of the community and ppl should be welcoming newcomers to grow the community but instead they gate keep. Very sad.

Honestly, there's only a couple people that I could pick out from my local that are like, and they are pretty easy to spot. Most jerrys tend to stay a way from the skinny kid with no helmet ripping a cig and yelling slurs at people skiing on the side of the park anyways. That being said you definitely see this type of behave a lot more among instagram comments and stuff like that. It seems that there are a lot of kids trying to get into park these days, so just be a homie and don't act like you're the shit because you can smoke a hunk of weed and blind 2 50% of the time.

I feel like it’s just high schoolers with a chip on their shoulder that act like that. All the older dudes couldn’t care less, as long as they get their turns in, and you’re not in their way. Even if a kid is in my way I’m always chill bcs they’re probably just learning.

To be completely honest, I haven't been on the hill this season, this is purely an observation from instagram comments and the social media scene as a whole, coming from sponsored skiers mind you... to the point where it made me think, "I can't possibly be the only person that sees the direction the park vibes are moving in."

That said I completely agree that this is a maturity issue primarily from the younger crowd, I don't see it as often from the older heads. But just figured I'd put this out there as an fyi to 16 year olds who think they deserve a golden statue for being able to do a cork 9 at their local mountain.

I do see your point, I just don't think it's nearly as prominent as it is in skiing for a few reasons. The main reason being the fact that skateboarding is inexpensive comparatively and thus you get less kids coming from money and a larger population partaking in the sport. So I agree it does happen in skating, as it would with any sport, I just feel like park skiing is becoming more and more concentrated with this type of mentality probably due to it being perpetuated through instagram.

So you're saying 10s of thousands of dollars spent on academies, coaches, summer camp's, and travel with access to airbags, olympic trampolines and foam pits don't directly correlate to a better skiing ability..... please elaborate.

Coolest part about coaching is that you do get to inspire kids for sure. But it's like little league shit dealing with washed-up has-been parents who could just put their kids through college instead.

I can totally agree with that. I think I am talking more in terms of people who do want to get better and have passion for the sport. For example, you have two kids who are equally as passionate, one who has access to these opportunities and one who doesn't I would say most of the time the kid with the opportunity and access to the above will most likely come out on top. I am from NH and without a doubt the best park skiers in this state come out of waterville academy and it's not even close, not to name drop but hunter henderson and keegan supple for example. I have skiied NH for some time and I've never seen anyone even close to their ability. They obviously have incredible work ethic and I am not discrediting that, all I'm saying is that opportunity does lead to a higher skill level for people who want it.

Overall freestyle skiing is baller af and you’ll meet some of the best people in the world. There are assholes everywhere. Freestyle as a whole just needs to ignore those types of people

Well I do agree that there is snobbery in park skiing and skateboarding is way more inclusive. BUUUTTT skateboarding was just like skiing when I was growing up. So, really, it’s skateboarding that got better and skiing just stayed the same.

Without social media I dont think there would be many snobby riders at all, there’s a whole group of people nowadays (skiers/boarders) that are way more focused on their social media clout and getting their newest trick on film. I think we’ve all been victim of someone with a camera closing off a feature so their buddy could get a clip.

But after all, skiing is drawing in alot of new riders nowadays compared to what it was a decade ago. More riders= more potential for douchebags to be picking up the sport that would have in the past picked snowboarding instead.

It's tough. I think for a lot of people in skiing right now, this is all they've got.

And I don't mean like a ski-bum type of "this is all they've got," I mean in the way that society as a whole, especially the youth, are on such a difficult path right now.

It's clear now that social media has fully gone to profiteering off of data harvesting, sucking people in to another swipe. I mean look at every social app out there, even fucking LinkedIN has reels.

And reels is 99% garbage fucking content. Of course in that 1% where I see my buddies clips, I'm stoked to see it and see what they are up to or the tricks they are working on. But as soon as you click on that reel and auto swipe, you just get surrounded by shit.

With all of the addiction right now and just the way things are turning i think a lot of young people feel that passions like skiing is all they've got. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it, I would say sometimes fortunately) every passion now a days is so tied to social media and comparison and that can be tough.

When someone starts recognizing that people are associating their value with their skill level, people can be assholes. But it's completely unnecessary. Luckily I see a lot of people growing out of this. Even kids at my local hill who 2 seasons ago were complete assholes have recognized that that's not going to bring them any joy.

Every once in a while I'll come across some dude in his late 20s or even mid 30s who thinks he's some tough shit. Even if he is better than everyone else at what he does, who really cares. It's different too if it's someone's career, as our culture associates one's career so closely to success.

But someone who is an asshole like that about skiing is pretty fucking powerless on their own. It's only when they get into their little groups that they gain any power.

So I'd say just tryna be the real you and not letting that shit get to you too much is about as much as you can do. That and just having conversations with people, especially those kind of difficult or socially scary situations of calling people out on their BS or acknowledging that our sport is really just for fun.

This year I started riding for a local shop, not based on my skiing abilities, but pretty much just based on my passion for the sport and really for the people in that sport. Shout out to SkiHut in Duluth for that.

Growing up in the Midwest I definitely appreciate the fact that skiing is much more accessible to those with less money. Hopefully access to skiing grows and isn't so elitest in the future but that will really only come around if that kind of belief is encouraged.

There are a few small not for profit ski hills like that. One of them is Chester Bowl in Duluth, Mn. Pretty much fully community and volunteer ran. $10 lift tickets, super chill vibes, chairlift on 90' of vertical gain with a dope little park setup that is always on rotation, what more could you ask for right? They are trying to get money for a new chalet right now so throw them some money if you really support this kind of supportive skiing mentality.

I ride at a pretty small mountain in wisconsin, and i’ve noticed that social media platforms have definitely played a role in the snobbery your referencing. There’s dudes who act like they are the absolute shit just because they got some likes on an insta edit and the hill reposted the edit on there story. The egos that some of these people have is out of this world. I’ve also noticed that because of this, there’s not much stoke in the park either. Someone will throw some cool/creative trick but get zero recognition or reaction from those watching, it’s like they take offense to someone being better than them. I think social media has honestly just taken a lot of creativity and hype away from the park overall. People are more worried about getting likes than throwing down.

we grew up going to different skate parks i guess lol. that shit was cut throat and fights broke out all the time over dumb egotistical shit. maybe im just old enough that people dont hassle me anymore or maybe i just don’t give a fuck if they do but the majority of the time, i talk to people, ask how their days going, see what they are working on, and once i established trust with them or see them struggle, i tell them i believe in them. i shit you not, after telling someone you believe in them
to land something, they are 90% more likely to lace it that try.

I don't really agree tbh but I always skated parks like Lynch Family and Denver, I think teenagers just act like that in general and if these are grown adults acting this way, then they never mentally matured past high school (peaking isn't just about popularity, it's also your mindset and outlook on life). I think skiing is way better now than it was, there used to be so many fights and so much beef at my hill growing up that the current social landscape of skiing seems tame rn, it's just kids posting hella clips trying to blow up. But hey, in the wise words of Colby Stevenson: "Show your shit". I mean both sports mentioned are built around media, edits have been a core piece of freeskiing since it was created, posting hella shit on insta is lazy, but no more lazy than some of the edits you see on NS from 2007 haha

Also like you might not care about someone's progression, but they do, I can't speak for everyone but I post hella shit on my youtube for me to rewatch specifically and not anyone else. The one thing I heavily agree with is that I don't fuck with gatekeeping at all, and "jerry" hate is the cringiest shit ever. I just personally would never waste emotional bandwidth on what the kids are doing, they're kids, can't say I was any better lol

You are absolutely right.

I recently started mountain biking during the summer. Alpine single trail enduro-style stuff. In many ways more intimidating than park skiing - at least to me.

Every time I have stepped off my bike on the side of the trail, at least one or two people will stop and ask if I'm ok, if I need help with anything.

If you have a flat, every single biker will stop and ask if you have everything you need to repair your tire.

Not a single time in my 20+ years of park skiing has anyone ever asked if I need help with anything. The fuck off attitude in the backcountry is even worse. You take care of your clique and that's it. I agree that it is disappointing.

Your post is inspiring to step out and make the difference.

I would say 60% of park rider are super approachable. 38% wanna ski and dont wanna hang and 2% are the internet troll that came to life.

n of 1 here but i ski park at two different resorts- one massive vail-owned behemoth with a rad park and a tiny local with limited terrain but a super passionate park crew and in both cases, i find it to be a complete lovefest in the park.

since my old ski crew from the ~2010-2015 era has dissolved (people grow up, move, find new interests, etc.), i've had to make new park friends. if i see somebody do something i like, i ski down to them and say so. if i am catching up with them at the bottom of the lift, i just ask if we can share a chair. if they have a pair of skis or boots (or whatever) i think are interesting, i ask a question about them. if i've witnessed someone doing the same trick over and over, i'll ask if they want me to grab a clip for them. there are endless icebreakers to employ.

just think about it like this - have you every been put off by someone coming up to you and saying they like a trick you did or that they think your hoodie is sick? i mean, even little kids can make a new friend in 2 seconds. we ought to be able to as well, don't you think?

0 days on the hill this season lol, I’ve been skiing park for 10 seasons now. Again not at all the case it’s just an observation I see on insta.

Got 30 days on the hill last year which is pretty good while working in corporate America. At least to me it is.

The reality is I just don’t have the same flexibility I did to get out as much as I’d like. hoping too soon but again I’m not worried about being “bullied” on the mountain, I think you’re missing my point but think what you will!

I’m scared to try new tricks in the big park in front of the good ppl so I gotta go to the little park and hide before I bring it back to main.

So many lil rich kids at my local got me feeling so inadequate as a skier sometimes.
then I realize I didn’t grow up that way and I didn’t start actually trying at park skiing until like 4 years ago and I don’t feel as bad.

I really try to poke fun at the situation and becoming a ski memer helps me work through my “Didn’t go to academy or summer camp” trauma lmaooo

Try a different mountain maybe. Park City is a mecca for those with pro ski ambitions. Same with Palisades Tahoe, JH, Mammoth, Breck, etc.

Head some place chill and less aggro.

Even if you head to the Wasatch backcountry, you're gonna find elitist snobs who are gonna tell you that you're not breaking trail the right way, or that you're not environmentally conscious enough - LOL.

Avoid the crowd, and you'll find more happiness.

So many lil rich kids at my local got me feeling so inadequate as a skier sometimes.
then I realize I didn’t grow up that way and I didn’t start actually trying at park skiing until like 4 years ago and I don’t feel as bad.

I really try to poke fun at the situation and becoming a ski memer helps me work through my “Didn’t go to academy or summer camp” trauma lmaooo

You need to stop reading Instagram comments, there is nothing worth reading in social media comment sections 99.9% of the time.

NS while being social media I wouldn't put under the same umbrella because the way forums work and building a "community" through actual discussion. This place is way less hostile than it was in the past. Any thread asking for help now gets a bunch of legit answers and maybe a few joking answers. As long as you ignore anything skierman and other obvious trolls have to say there is very little legit hate on ski gabber on beginners.
There is hate on am/professional content because that's what most of us are here to discuss. You don't need to like everything and it is fine to express that imo, just don't be a dick about it.
Most hate here goes to "social media skiers" which I don't think is completely fair because that's part of the game these days. I watch very little ski content on insta because I would rather watch a full edit than a couple random clips tossed together with a song.

On hill the only hate I ever see is stupid insecure teenagers and that is a tale old as time. Sure Ive laughed with friends when I see someone eat it in an obscene way. Not laughing at the person, falling on skis/snowboard is just hilarious sometimes.

ScootSkiLyfeIt's tough. I think for a lot of people in skiing right now, this is all they've got.

And I don't mean like a ski-bum type of "this is all they've got," I mean in the way that society as a whole, especially the youth, are on such a difficult path right now.

It's clear now that social media has fully gone to profiteering off of data harvesting, sucking people in to another swipe. I mean look at every social app out there, even fucking LinkedIN has reels.

And reels is 99% garbage fucking content. Of course in that 1% where I see my buddies clips, I'm stoked to see it and see what they are up to or the tricks they are working on. But as soon as you click on that reel and auto swipe, you just get surrounded by shit.

With all of the addiction right now and just the way things are turning i think a lot of young people feel that passions like skiing is all they've got. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it, I would say sometimes fortunately) every passion now a days is so tied to social media and comparison and that can be tough.

When someone starts recognizing that people are associating their value with their skill level, people can be assholes. But it's completely unnecessary. Luckily I see a lot of people growing out of this. Even kids at my local hill who 2 seasons ago were complete assholes have recognized that that's not going to bring them any joy.

Every once in a while I'll come across some dude in his late 20s or even mid 30s who thinks he's some tough shit. Even if he is better than everyone else at what he does, who really cares. It's different too if it's someone's career, as our culture associates one's career so closely to success.

But someone who is an asshole like that about skiing is pretty fucking powerless on their own. It's only when they get into their little groups that they gain any power.

So I'd say just tryna be the real you and not letting that shit get to you too much is about as much as you can do. That and just having conversations with people, especially those kind of difficult or socially scary situations of calling people out on their BS or acknowledging that our sport is really just for fun.

This year I started riding for a local shop, not based on my skiing abilities, but pretty much just based on my passion for the sport and really for the people in that sport. Shout out to SkiHut in Duluth for that.

Growing up in the Midwest I definitely appreciate the fact that skiing is much more accessible to those with less money. Hopefully access to skiing grows and isn't so elitest in the future but that will really only come around if that kind of belief is encouraged.

There are a few small not for profit ski hills like that. One of them is Chester Bowl in Duluth, Mn. Pretty much fully community and volunteer ran. $10 lift tickets, super chill vibes, chairlift on 90' of vertical gain with a dope little park setup that is always on rotation, what more could you ask for right? They are trying to get money for a new chalet right now so throw them some money if you really support this kind of supportive skiing mentality.

The kids been perma banned like 6 times now and has to keep creating alt accounts to get back on the site. Does the same thing over and over again. Runs his mouth,Talks a bunch of shit, tries to spout his opinions as facts then gets banned. Rinse and repeat.
