je_t.aime_canardWhen would an appropriate period to strike be for ski patrollers then? The point of a strike is it's meant to prove the value of the labour that they provide, that's why train strikes in the UK are such a pain in the arse, because they bring the country to it's knees and are therefore resolved very quickly. If the ski patrollers were to strike in the summer they'd be largely ignored, because who tf cares if 0% of pistes are open in August.
As for the impact on budget, frankly that's not the fault of the patrollers, it's not on them to worry about how to handle to books after this increased business expense, they're right to demand a better standard of living and the wages that are required for it.
partyandBSopening day. never should have started. and their would be more focus outside of the ski industry on it as most people are busy during the holidays so they probably saw it, said that sucks and then didn’t care.
saying its not on the patrollers to think about the wholistic impact they are causing is so fuckin selfish and entitled and such a near sighted trash take. they are impacting the lives of other departments who make less than them which as defined by patrol is not a livable wage.
again, i agree that resort employees should be able to afford to live in the communities they participate in and i am an advocate for increased pay to ALL resort employees but the tactics used in this are so off putting to me. i hope those patrollers love PCMR because no one else will want to hire them.
theabortionatorI mean VR fought them for like 9 months for a raise from from 16 to 17.50 like 2 years ago. I get you're pissed about it being during the holidays and stuff but Vail drf has plenty of blame in the situation. In that prior one they either said "we cant afford it" or stonewalled them. Shockingly when they were lacking employees and the j1s to exploit to make the difference they went baseline $20 for every job.
"We cant afford to give skilled people keeping our guests safe $17" ended with somehow being able to pay all workers $20 real fast.
They did the same shit at northstar. Paying $12 when taco bell was $17. Then they had lifts closed because of lack of emplloyees and were paying managers a 6th day of OT ro stay open. They don't give a fuck about wasting money in the short term if they can fuck workers in the long term.
I get that it sucks if this impacted your vacation. That blows, but I still feel ita wild to act like Vail regularly acts in good faith on these issues or would have been willing to adjist the pay for patrollers without drastic actions.
Again there's nearly 2 years of negotiations between the 2 rounds of this. I get not instantly caving to a raise, but neither time did patrol make unreasonable demands.
The first time was shown to absolutely be valod because Vail did this company wide months after and to an actually higher dollar amount.
I also don't think the vibe industry is as against them as you think. People I talked to at mammoth were all about it. Friends in the industry elsewhere donated to the strike fun.
Sure they be on a do not rehigher list for Vail but they aren't exactly blacklisted. And the industry has shown that it needs the workers more than they need the job.
That's what got us here. I don't expect them to open their ears and make changes because Vail is run by gross corporate lizard peope without souls, but the tide is finally swining somewhat in favor of workers.
There was a pretty dark time where inflation and every other jobs $ increased, ski resorts changes little but removed large amounts of the benefits that supposedly made it worth while. At the same time the $1000 4 br in Leadville, Tahoe, wherever became not a thing.
Sure they could have stopped the strike at any point and less peoples vacations would be bad. That's not their responsibility as nuch as Vails. They are there to work, get paid a hopefully living wage and keep people safe.
Vail could have stopped it at any point to because it's THEIR customers. They chose not to over a petty amount of money. I'm throwing the blame at them every time.
Usually I can figure out the other argument a little more but it seems cut and dry. I think maybe some people against ski patrol either make less, or feel like they deserve more. Seeing somebody else get a raise when you didnt sucks i guess but im happy for them.
Victories like these will bring the wages up. After being stagnant for so long they're finally moving and that's good for everyone.
People say "If you don't get paid enough go somewhere else" i say "if your vacation was fucked up bevause Vail are greedy shitbags, go somewhere else"
So maybe the closest to agreeing
/rant lol
I needed to type some post work words anyway
