I know the US ski team did some sort of deal w XGames and initially I was super stoked. I was even more stoked to see "unknown" riders such as annabscooby invited (and make finals!!!) to the rail jam in Copper that just went down. But Im just not sure what this all means because all FIS/ US Ski team does is impose rules and make skiing for the elite...

I think this new event took over the space we would have had with Xgames.. After last years Slvsh Cup and live 'Test' event we were under the impression that the producers were extremely stoked and already starting talking about making it bigger, better and fixing any issues we had with the live event (there were lots). We had planned on doing the first few rounds of a Slvsh cup prior and hopefully the semi and finals games live in aspen but got radio silence when we reached out this summer/fall.
Im hyped they added a new event for skiing and its awesome that they're "trying" to involve some new names outside of the usually big air and slope athletes but I believe they lost sight somewhere along the way. Glad we had the opportunity to collab with Xgames but I highly doubt it will ever happen again.

Like so many brands with deep pockets that are guests in the freeskiing space, Xgames seems willing to make the same mistake which is refusing to pay/partner with people that are on the bleeding edge of the sport in pursuit of ‘saving’ money, unaware of their own blind spots and perception in the very community they’re claiming to represent. The result: unpopular ways of running things that were decided in board rooms that ultimately don’t translate as well as if you just had the best people for the job (Slvsh) running it instead of corporate pukes that don’t even ski.
The irony to this approach is that these brands don’t really end up saving money in the long run when they refuse to actually work with freeskiers, they just end up paying the wrong people to do an inferior job, all the while blissfully unaware because the person making these decisions doesn’t understand freeskiing. Inefficiency born of pride that forces them to constantly exert effort to find new ways to win over the community time and time again instead of just paying the content creators in the community in the first place. People can sense inauthenticity, even with all of the technical difficulties of the slvsh format last year it had heart and connection to the freeskiing community whereas the event this year feels like it’s just running on fumes that slvsh cultivated that will quickly evaporate with time.
And at what point do we acknowledge the long, abusive history xgames has had with freeskiing? At what point do we call it out for being a vampire towards the core of the sport and never fully returning to the community what it takes? At what point do we stop accepting xgames as the defining freeskiing event of the year because of its continual disregard of pros, creators, community personalities, just because its rich enough to ignore the very people creating the value? Is this really a relationship freeskiing needs anymore with the power of the internet these days?
People really don’t give Slvsh enough credit for what it is, I think it should be emphasized how important, unique and truly special it is to me and this community. Thank you Joss, really. Events like Jib League and Kimbo are also worth mentioning, these guys are actually the core of this community, not allowing people that aren’t freeskiers to dictate what freeskiing competitions have to look like. We shouldn’t take any of you guys for granted.
Just a thought here, shredfest in SLC didn't happen this year but I was under the impression they made good money selling tickets before. Ever thought about doing a SLVSH event in the city park like that during the winter?

Thats a real awesome idea and I think it would be a really fun live event for everyone. I have tried to think of something close but this really made more sense than I made it in my mind!!
Thought we were about to see a big resurgence with steel city showdown and level 1 rail jam tour leading the way, but those events seem pretty short lived now. Not sure if there’s any plans in the works for either anymore
theabortionatorNeed moar independent events but its hard because of logistics. Can't really do it seat of your pants and there's little to no money in it.

Spaghetti jam needs to come back. I'm hoping Vishnu defines "Annual" as every 6 years and SLC folks are eating spaghetti out of plastic bags in a public park this February.
