Literally only place in southern vt with jumps. Anyone else feel like every year they setup the parks the exact same way, with rail locations, pads and big pills/spines? It's been pretty stagnant over the past 5 years I've skied

My family used to house kids at The Winter Sports School in PC for cheaper ski team tuition and/or help with paying rent in return. Can confirm some of those kids are buckwild.

The kids/riders themselves aren’t the issue here, They’re sick at skiing. Its “ what the fuck is this ‘program’ ” and why aren’t they at their dedicated mountain

Most ski academies are run separately from the mountain. Some mountains say fuck parks and it's not like the school can just snap their fingers and summon a good park. As someone who loves to shit on SMS in particular, I'm sure they and most of their athletes would prefer Stratton just have good parks than have to drive an extra 30 mins to Mount Snow.

I agree with you and Kila but 60 features across their parks in December outweighs the few complaints I have by a mile (not saying you're ungrateful lol). At least they still have some priority, whereas Okemo has gutted their parks over the past 5ish years (# of park trails reduced, late setups, etc.).

be grateful you have big spines, most mtns don't have The Dopest Feature anymore... but yeah the few times i've been to carinthia since their golden age i agree theyre pretty uninspired. still better than most though i think

So did we ever get an answer on what the end goal is for freeskiers attending these schools? They can't even leverage their skills for college admissions since no college freeskiing teams actively recruit or dole out scholarships. That's the common justification for racers and XC skiers.
There's also legitimately zero opportunity from a career standpoint. It's well established that freeskiers make no money outside of a select few. Why would a presumably well-educated, successful family consider it a viable option for their kid? The only exception might apply to families with fuck you money where long-term career prospects don't matter.

well they’re athletes took home 4 medals last olympics and they would have ranked 17th if that tiny school was its own country. thats what this article says at least. must be small because in 50 years, they haven’t even had 1,000 total students. so that averages to less than 20 students per class.

^I totally support this type of scheduling. lol pretty sure programs at Hood run similar hours. A lot of times I will just be rolling up on my first chair of the day and I see a whole parade of people with some sort of academy or camp or something leaving the mountain with all kinds of extra bags and shouldering extra skis etc.
Fair enough - I guess freeskiing's Olympic debut changes the conversation a bit. I'm pretty sure Mac Forehand is an SMS alum. That being said, the vast majority of the school's olympic medals have come from racing and XC over the years.
I knew a few kids that went to SMS growing up and the schedule is confirmed sick. They basically skied 80% of the winter and did a few hours of homework per week. I would definitely be questioning my investment as a parent though lol.

Easy way to send your kids off somewhere to be out of your hair and especially if they have aspirations for being a pro skier. These academies seem to be a fast track to meeting the right people and getting places. Same goes for daddy buying acceptance to any ivy league school. It's a club and none of us are part of it.

VSSA kids throw down. Makes me jealous in a way, but also I live in denver and can never feel like I can work on anything when breaks between days are anywhere from a few to a week or more. Trying for 50 this year, but I doubt ill make it.
