DSLR or Point and shoot camera?

i almost exclusively shoot on my little point and shoot 35mm because it fits in my pocket. you can always sell and reinvest if you change your mind and feel like having a dslr and a collection of glass is what you want. they say marry the lens date the body haha, so if your goal is to get into the dslr realm it’s worth it to invest in nicer lenses.
as far as a camera to go skiing with, i much prefer a point and shoot.

Man I barely film or take pics any more tbh but I still love it and If I was getting into it all over again:
Id also want one camera that would film and photograph, and I’d want one that would do both equally well jic I don’t care about one or the other down the road.
id want one that would be reasonably cheap to get my hands on but super upgradable. Something that would do everything I’d want to for a hobby all the way up to if I wanted to take it seriously.

for those reasons I’d get a Canon 5D Mk3 off marketplace. it’s an older gen camera but still relevant today even for cinematography (due to magic lantern and such). Body can be had for like 600 bucks and id get a Canon 50mm f1.8 STM lens to get started for like 170 bucks new. Grab a Cam Caddie Scorpion or off brand equivalent for filming and you’re laughing. Then if you’re really getting into it down the road and want to upgrade lens, you can hunt deals and find something like a Sigma Art 35mm or a Canon 24-70 based on preference and opinion you will no doubt form on your journey.

otherwise I’d do as Ms. Obermeyer says and get a 35mm point and shoot. That’s what got me interested in photography in the first place you’ll have a hoot

Have you considered something like the Sony a6000? Mirrorless, small and compact with a flat lens, could be ideal for what your looking for?


I used to run one and wish to this day I still had it for your exact use.

Kodak 35mm!!! Wait nvm that’s a film camera, on the digital side u can get a Sony rx100 VII but that’s expensive, something cheaper would be a Sony zv1 but there’s not interchangeable lenses for like a fisheye or something

This is hard to answer imo because I would say to get a small camera for video but then a mirrorless slr camera for photos. You dont need the latest and greatest high speed fps shooting camera. Main thing that matters in ski photography is just a fast shutter and good focus. Also depends on the angle you want? Rail clips from a point or jumps or a follow cam? Id say go more wide angle if youre close and stationary and more telephoto if youre further away or midzoom for follow cam, but theres so many options out there nowadays such as newer gopros or insta 360 cameras. The best photos though will be from a dedicated stills camera though.

Honestly, I haven’t given it much thought since I last posted. But I guess I’m looking for something powerful and compact that I can quickly pull out and shoot. I’d be shooting action shots, the scenery around us, and some follow cam clips thru the park, maybe even just posting up by a feature for a quick clip.


Id use my iphone, but last time I skied with it I smashed it so bad when I bailed, so I’d rather leave it in the car.

Canon elph 360. really small light point and shoot but it can shoot at 22 mp and has a bunch of fancy features. check out @chiueyy on tiktok, pretty sure he posted a few pvc clips earlier this season filmed with an elph. pretty good quality and fits in your pocket so its a win win

Everyone is saying point and shoot because they are generally made smaller than like a dslr or mirrorless but if you want your shots framed right then you will not want a point and shoot
