if you do this on resort property, there is almost a 100% chance they'll ask you to leave, so I'd recommend doing it from home

if you do it from home and want it to be legitimate, you can register a business name with your secretary of state. it is probably easiest to just register as a sole proprietor doing business as __fill in the blank with your biz name__. any income you make will just be reported on your annual tax return, so make sure to set a bit of it aside to cover your fed/state income tax

if your state has sales tax, you'll need to also register with the tax department. however, since you are providing a service rather than a physical product, you shouldn't actually need to collect and remit any sales tax.

keep track of your expenses and income in a simple spreadsheet. any wax/files/iron/guides etc can be deducted from your income

you can also account a percentage of your home utilities and rent/mortgage based on the area of your home that you use (say for example, a space 200 sqft bedroom). your accountant (or something like turbo tax) will easily be able to handle this

you dont need a waiver for wax. just ski mounting lol

id charge 20-30 to wax a pair of skis. depending on your area you could charge more if you are arranging pickup/drop off.

people are deff after the service and sounds like at your level, referrals are everything so print some biz cards. place em under wiper blades if you see ski stickers on cars, and try to get the word out

thanks for the help. I'm going to just run this out of my garage and charge 30 bucks a pair. I'm going to make a post on facebook promoting it. ill just say to the people that I do not touch bindings, and that anything that happens on the hill is not my fault.

What do local shops charge near you? You’re gonna have to undersell them. Most families are rather going to go to a reputable shop than a teen in his garage especially if people are working on their kids skis, especially if they’re still having to drive to drop skis off and pick them up.

if you can set up a mobile set up where you can go to them and say wax their skis in 30 mins all on location would be much more appealing and something more people would be willing to pay for.

i would pay a teenager $20 to wax and not touch my edges please.

DO NOT offer to hold their skis until the customer wants to come and pick them up. you will be drowning in skis and have no place to work, eat, breathe or scream.

a vented van to do mobile base repairs and waxes (minimal skill) would be a good huslte. don't fumigate yourself.

Im going on my 3rd year of my wax side hustle. I take skis on the racks at the resort and i shave off all the wax from the base of them into a bin and put the skis back where they were. I manage to get about 45 lbs of wax during a good season and i resell them to shops for a nice price.

no local shops near me, that's why its a good idea

I used to do it a bit in my teens. A teacher at the school had 2 kids. She knew I snowboarded all the time and asked if I could wax their skis/snowboard.


Wasn't like a business but other people would sometimes hit hit up in the fall. Closest ski shop was an hour and 20 minutes, but we had a small ski hill in town.

So semi unique situation possibly. 3 ski ares within a 40 min drive but no shop.

I kmow a lot of people just bring a case of beer to their local shop to get a wax or tune. Also suburban families prolly don't know about it.


I dont really know how you'd advertise but maybe try and get some neighbors/friends and branch out from their. Don't start too big.

I dig the idea somebody posted about setting up in the lot at the mtn. Hell sometimes id prolly even pay for a wax on lot and im broke. Your normal jabronis, for sure. Also not sure how cool the mtn would be about. Prolly depends where you go
