there is a 1100 acre wildfire burning in western mass.

Luckily 1.5" of rain coming to help subdue them hopefully. Been so dry the ground is still going to have a hard time absorbing it though

vibing like BC in the summer. hope its under control soon. if all goes to shit, I hope you at least end up with a goddamn amazing glades run with trees still intact but branches all burnt aka burnt forest glades on blackcomb... amazing skiing

I think we need to reduce wildfire danger by removing all underbrush and spacing trees so they are nice and skiable in the winter

In case anyone is interested,

the fire reached within 500-800 ft of my parents house, where the volunteer firefighters had cut a break. But the break held and the fire seemed to be only burning dead leaves and brush. the fire reached basically the backyard of one of our neighbors (who lives further up the hill) but the fire department was able to contain it, and the house was undamaged.

The fire is likely to continue into winter, but there is theoretically a lot of snow coming in next week, which might put it out, especially if it is only burning the brush level.

Higher up the ridgeline I believe that the fire is really burning the trees, but I don't know.

Everyone and everyone's houses should be safe from here on out.

Not sure how/if this will affect butternut's ski season tho

Not sure if you were trying to make a joke here, but removing underbrush and thinning out trees is a standard procedure in all national forests.

Best of luck from Boise here, this was the worst fire summer we've ever had, one literally in town burned 10,000 acres and two others burned a bunch of the historic Oregon Trail reserve. Over half of the Sawtooths burned down.

My parents live in PA and have been commenting on the extreme lack of rain this summer. West coast droughts/fire are bad but god damn I can't even imagine how quickly things would spread in a dense east coast forest when things are dry

there are several places on the east that have really sick steep faces and terrain but it's all choked with small trees and brush. someone needs to get the air force to do a few precision bombing runs in key places and open shit up for us

This is what I’m talking about! Save the forest with bombs. Indigenous people cleared underbrush for thousands of years, being anti glade is an extension of settler colonialism

Correct me if I’m wrong, doesn’t Butternut have a tornado scar on it / nearby? Hopefully the fire doesn’t get onto the mountain and make it a tough season

And yes, a tornado passed right down the road back in the 90s i believe. Lol quite unfortunate.
