What kind of vish- I mean roof box should I get?

I've got some beat roof racks from a buddy that need a new clamp to keep them secure to the crossbars but I would love to avoid a sketchy method like that and invest in a full size roof box for more multi purposes than just packing skis, but skis are priority. Fitting up to a 189 size ski for all my tall freak friends. Any recommendations? Best value options?

I daily the redster sg fis revoshock m in the 212 length and they fit perfectly in the trunk of my Prius.

See if you can get some Craigslist/FB marketplace cross bars for your rig, then buy whatever Thule or Yakima box to go with?

If you buy a whole brand new setup with crossbars and a big box it'll be like $2000.

What cross bars do you have or what shape are they? I don't think one is better than the other. REI has like 20% off on a bunch of them right now which helps. Just see what the longest box that'll fit your vehicle is? If you have a hatch/wagon/SUV you want to be able to open the hatch with the box on.

I got a $900 roof bix for like 350 cause it had a small dent in isnt and it was like a 3 year old model (still brand new) from a dealer.

keep eyes peeled and if you got a bigger car get the biggest size possible, if it’s like a sedan or compact hatchback get one of the medium but longer boxes

if you got the quals you can potentially get a prodeal straight through yakima/thule. a few years ago the discount was like 50%, not sure bout now

got a pro deal on a thule xl force like 7 years ago, it’s held up pretty well but the hinge has broken and the clamps don’t always stay tight- have to be gentle with the ones that open on both sides. nice to have some width + height for camping gear etc, definitely recommend it if you can find a deal! can fit 5-6 pairs of skis if you’re tactical

Just go on FB marketplace or Craigslist, you can find a box for like 75 bucks

I bought the same one this week, used. It's waaay bigger than I'll ever need and looks comically large on my small car. But it's super easy to set up and I'll never be space limited again.

Keep an eye on the weight limit for your cross bars and also the roof structure of your vehicle.

Good point. My roof is only rated for 110lb (which seems incredibly conservative). After the rack and box, that only gives me around 50lb of useful load.
I'll probably exceed that on occasion, but I'll keep it reasonable.

used market in squamish is $300 for a box from 1998 hahaha. with no keys. if you can find a decent box for $75 in your area this is def the route to take.
