Ship skis, or rent

say I were to plan a ski vacation, would it make sense to ship out my own skis, or should I rent a really nice pair. its way more cost-effective to rent, but I would also like the comfort of my own skis. also I plan on hitting the park so how do rental companies do with rails.

Probably easiest and safest to fly with them, get a good ski bag and look at what airlines have the cheapest option.

Ive always been allowed to check skis on the flight for the standard $50 bag fee. I think SouthWest even still lets you count it as one of your free bags. I dont see why you wouldnt do that tbh. Even if you need to buy a bag it's going to be way cheaper than renting. Just carry on your boots just in case.

I'd only rent if I was going someplace with vastly different conditions than those to which my ski options were suited. Renting demo skis is usually $50-75/day whenever I've looked into it and airlines will charge you for a regular checked bag usually. Make sure to check the weight limits, usually 20-25kg/50lbs, if you go over the price doubles.

Why wouldn't you take them on the plane with you? Most airlines offer a free bag(s) and even if you pay $30-50 for your ski bag, thats cheaper than renting or shipping.

definitely fly. I always check my ski and bootbag as "one bag". cheaper than a rental and wayy better, if I am short on space can always bring some backpacks as carry on

I think united does this where sports equipment can be counted as one bag. but they might have changed this recently as I cant find it online.

Where are you coming from? I always have to fly to ski and I always fly southwest. They’ll count your boot bag and skis as 1 bag and it’s free. So you can still bring a clothing bag and carry on all free. So 4 bags total. I travel with a double Sportube which carries 2 skis. I check in one clothing bag and carry on a ski boot bag with my boots, full set of ski gear and some extra clothing.

I'm all about ultra basic fare low cost carriers these days, I have become accustomed to traveling with just a "personal item" in the form of a 20L backpack. If I'm going skiing then it's a roller ski bag and a personal item.

I’m basically carrying the same thing you are but with skis. Clothes bag, ski backpack and sports tube. My back pack counts as my carry on because of its size so I don’t have another personal item.

I said southwest lets you take 4. I don’t carry 4. I only carry 2 bags and a sport tube. One clothes bag and 1 boot back pack. I have to bring skis. You don’t bring your skis? If so then I take exactly what you do.

Ya but he said when he skis he brings a roller bag and a personal item. Which I assume is a back pack. Which is exactly what I bring. A roller bag for clothes and a back pack with my boots. Which was my point to him. Ya I check the roller bag in because it’s free and I have zero interest in lugging it on the plane. Especially when that doesn’t save any money. If he’s bringing skis then he’s literally bring 3 back just like me. If he’s renting then it’s a wash.

Pro tip out there for the youth or those who may not know..

Check the skis, but bring your boots with you as a carry on. This way if the airlines loses your bag, you'll still have properly fitting boots (assuming you have some that work). Much better to demo a pair of decent skis at your destination, then to have to deal with shitty rental boots

I misunderstood. I thought you said a ski bag, a boot bag, a clothes bag, and a backpack and I was thinking I don't even know how you carry that much shit around an airport, let alone a bus/train/taxi etc.

It's just a different ethos or lifestyle. I like to have the freedom to get around easily and change plans on the fly. I don't really go places that don't have laundry available, I'm not climbing Mount Everest or trekking in the Amazon Rainforest or anything. I don't really need a bunch of things, they just weigh me down and cause stress.
