Best jobs that are skiing related/allow you to live in the mountains?

sorry to break it to you but we live in America.

Now that 100% remote work is a very real option, if you want more flexibility to move around then something tech-related could give you the money to afford to live in a ski town, the flexibility to actually ski, and you can easily just move around and ski a different mountain each year. If you plan to be in one location then trades are for sure a good way to go.

matsuiy22not sure how u go about this but being a ski rep or gear rep for companies seems very cool. I work at a shop I envy the dudes that come in. Free gear, summers off and you get to sell skis lol. No brainer

everyone I know that's a ski rep has said it's resulted in less skiing for them bc their busy season is the ski season. it's a lot of travelling around and getting a lot of like single laps in. lots of golf in the summer tho apparently

I think the move would be to be a rep for a summer-oriented product that's owned by a parent company that owns ski brands

Some sort of equipment ops job. I plow snow for this resort and its easily the best job ive ever had. 4 days on, 3 days off to ski. 10 hour days and im not sore from work cause I just sit in a truck all day

usfs and doi hiring has been kinda fucked the last couple yrs but check out usajobs. search firefighter 2 handcrew, engine, and helitack positions. theoretically, districts should be doing hiring rn. idk w tryna make all the seasonals perms tho 🤷‍♂️

kindve understand where youre coming from but in 2024 in our current society i honestly dont think you can truly blame individuals for mooching unemployment (coming from an amerikkkan). existing in western society where we’re all conditioned to be so damn individualistic and cutthroat, and the richest bootlickers (boots?) are given celebrity for exploiting their workers, i personally don’t think you can fault an average person for taking what they can get. obviously, not everyone’s working in good faith but still, people who are on the line of being ‘deserving’ of benefits aren’t taking benefits from others. that’s a strawman lol. no social welfare system in the west is properly funded, we need to use our tax $ to subsidize military contractors and our economic system instead. the sentiment that your work ethic or grit is tied to your worth as a human is conditioned too. just sum food for thought

-skian-Totally agree, it really gets my goat that people take it just for fun. Of course we all want a paid vacation, but what if we all took it? I think it is horrid that people take it for fun when people genuinely need it. We used to year after year have people apply to work, get a job offer, and then never hear from them again. We learned later that if you show that you are trying to get work you can extend your EI. Brutal, and screws over the people actually working.

You definitely can get a visa to plant, you are right. I just meant if you live in the states and do not want to take a big journey and work in a different country it would be tough. Not saying impossible. That said it is a journey to go planting no matter where you live it seems... haha. Where did/do you plant?

Definitely agreeable, but I personally feel the folks you mentioned who are exploitative (boy do I ever know they are out there haha) could be reduced if people recognized it, and moved on to another employer, rather than no employer. If people take the power of leaving, that employer soon enough will be struggling, and have to make changes to attract people, and encourage a workforce that wants to stay there. I have been on the wrong end of exploitation many times, and the sad reality is that it happens because there are not enough workers/applications a lot of the time. So I have spent a lot of time trying to fill more than one position becouse we are shortstaffed. Of course there is exploitation, and often employers straight up suck, but I do believe a sizable portion will suck due to lack of humanpower, or having to make an employee fill a position off the hop-fully green, that should be for an experienced person. Just for the sake of not having any around. And in an idealistic (read: unrealistic lol) system, only those who truly need EI take it - single parents with no leave come to mind, or people who have been fired and need to get their feet under them before trying again - and those who do not NEED it, work. That way the system would need to be funded less, aka the individual/business taxed less, and therefore wages would go up. I see how that is not very acheivable currently, but I do believe there are many problems with todays system, and it should be stricter. Again, I am not against EI, just the abuse of it. I know too many people who work a seasonable job, and then just ride the train because it is fun and they get time off paid. That curdles my blood. I come from a family who was evicted from our house when I was 13 and had to start full time work year round while homeschooling to have a paycheck to get my family out of debt, and now I am a manager at work, and own a house, all from hard work, so I think the choice of EI over work is a major cop out that makes me feel like a fool for working instead of just having a good time. No matter how much it sucks, the world needs people to work to keep it turning (metaphorically) and avoiding work is not the path towards reform in my opinion. Sorry if that was too much, I was just letting it spill out here.

lots of good private mtb trailbuilding crews out there. usually working in cool areas. keeps you in shape. lots of ride time. start out doing hand work and then get on a mini x and the fun begins. https://www.trailskills.org/jobs

Get a lifty job at the mtn of your choice, somewhere you're hyped on. Apply early- especially if the mountain can offer you housing. Great way to get your foot in the door of working in the industry and get exposure to all the different departments that you could potentially find a new interest in to build a career on (working with and around patrol, grooming, park crew, lift mtc etc daily) plus you get a season pass included with your job so you can ride even more. Sure, its not always the most lucrative and glamorous way to go about it, but it sure is fun and is a good place to start. It's what you make of it.
Most people who now have a career in the ski industry and spend their lives in the mountains started off as a lifty- including myself.

Local/State/Federal government. They have jurisdiction over the resorts, so you naturally partner with them. Very cushy stable careers with tons of time off.

See which government offices are closest to the ski resort and pick your poison - planning, administration, public works, police, dog shelter, environmental compliance... sky is the limit

Im a marine engineering officer. Work all summer, make stacks of cash and ski all winter.
