I said GDP isn't the only measure of the market. Just like the president isn't the only factor as well.

One day rallies in the market can be related to a single event.

Thats why i was comparing the one day rally and not the entire term of president.

I said, if you want to look at the market performance under a POTUS, a single day is irrelevant. You're better off looking at a 4 year figure.

Why? Because that's where the actions of a POTUS can show up. GDP growth, unemployment, fiscal policy, foreign policy, etc. all are reflected in that overall growth.

A single day rally can disappear as quickly as it appeared.

Ironically, in the long run, the market and growth of the economy are negatively correlated. A TL;DR for that is growth doesn't necessarily reflect profits. You can have technological innovations that improve productivity and result in more competition (benefiting consumers and workers) or increasing capital and labor inputs (thereby hurting / slowing down profit growth).

I've said that many times actually on this forum where people say "look at the stock market, the economy is doing well" or vice versa. The market prices in expectations. If things overperform or underperform, that's when you see changes. That's why a long-run view is good.

I heard a story a couple weeks ago about some venezuelan immigrants who live in florida and have been living their for like 20 years. They voted for trump because there are actually tons of illegal immigrants in their area that are criminals, etc. and they give them a bad reputation.

I like how we bring up the Veterans always. "The illegals are getting everything instead of the veterans" as if it's taking away from the veterans.

It's borderline criminal how we treat out veterans especially after all the recruiting efforts on billboarda, insta ads, in high schools. We send them to wars, that may not always be to keep America safe, then when they get home they are on their own. I've had friends wait super long even for hearing aid because their hearing got fucked up over there.

BUT, this is not because of illegals. We choose to treat our veterans this way. 3rd party groups like wounded warrior etc are awesome but why the fuck do citizena have to donate so somebody can get a prosthetic or a wheel chair, or surgery they need. Our "defense" budget is massive. If you're going to send young men to war, take care of them when they get home. We honestly shouldn't even be allowed to send them out without a system in place to take care of them.

Beyond that America has a terrible health care system. I know "its the greatest in the world and every country is jealous. Not sure why pretty much everyone in every country I've lived in loves their health care and thinks our system us stupid.

Even South Africa as sketchy as the crime is you can go to the hospital for no cost. In America we have all these rules that make the system extremely difficult or borderline unusable. Oh you cant see that doctor, he's out of network. You have people callinf each other back and forth to see if you're covered or they deny you. Even people who have "good insurance" get fucked many times.

Also having health care tied to employment is stupid. Keeping a terrible job because you don't want your kids to die.

Then, the amount of gofundmes I see and donate to every yeat for health care. Broken legs, back, neck, cancer, infections. It's great thay people come together as a community but why the hell is it like this? Especially if our system is so great.

Why was there a gofundme on hear for someone's child that had cancer? How does that make our system seem great.

Income tax - An estimated 50% of undocumented immigrants use an ITIN and file annual tax returns. Furthermore, if they receive a paycheck they have income deducted through state and federal taxes.

Sales tax - Every time an undocumented immigrant purchases an item through a legitimate storefront, they pay sales taxes, just like you and me.

Excise tax - Same as above, if they have a registered vehicle, they pay an excise tax.

Property tax - Story continues.

Despite all of this, they are unable to draw upon Medicare, Social Security, or Unemployment Insurance.

So many (I'd argue majority) of immigrants pay taxes to the United States government but are unable to draw upon key social programs.

So the fact of the matter is, if they're paying taxes, they're paying for their school system.

And it's incredibly racist to think that it's only undocumented immigrants who require teachers to learn Spanish. There are many legal immigrants here who benefit from teachers being fluent in Spanish as well as English.

And if you want to complain about veterans and homelessness, I'd recommend you compare what the Democrats and GOP do for those two items.

Neither are perfect, but one tends to stonewall reform a lot more than the other.

The impact of undocumented and documented migrant workers is incredibly large. If they stopped working, the rate at which things would grind to a halt in the US would blow peoples minds.

It's a pretty common story to hear across large metropolitan areas that migrant workers generally more reliable, better, and can be cheaper than domestic labor.

Anecdotal story -

Once asked a local guy in a ski town to do some lawn work over the summer. Offered $300 over the summer for a few days of mowing a tiny lawn.

Guess who never showed up. Pursued the guy and asked why he didn't do it.

His response? "Wasn't worth his time".

It would have taken him 15-20 minutes, max, with a pushmower. If he had stand-on or sit-down? 5.

Asked around and was given the name of someone who was clearly a migrant worker. No idea if he was documented or undocumented, didn't care to ask.

Offered him the same. Lawn was done on time, with picture proof, and heard zero complaints.

Nah, health care is a huge issue in America. We pay a ton and still have one of the worst healthcare systems in the modern world. Donation based groups to help Veterans injured overseas, and keep little kids from dying of cancer is not how this should be.

Well when you have items like ITINs and pay stubs you can certainly see what that contribution is...and then extrapolate from there.

ITINs are not given to any federal law enforcement agency (outside of the IRS) as a means to protect tax compliance.

It's not too difficult to gauge a rough estimate of undocumented immigrants in the US. You can use ACS or CBS data. You could also use the methodology that the DHS OIS uses as well.

Either way, it's not like you have 100M undocumented immigrants in a country of 334M.

Most reputable estimates place it around ~10-13M.


It really blows my mind how little people seem to know about how undocumented immigrants contribute to the US economy and frankly how it's not really that difficult to quantify it.
