Axle back vs cat back exhaust systems

idk what I should do for my car. axle back is cheaper and reversible, but it may sound worse and have a bigger chance of exhaust leaks. cat back is pricy but way more reliable. also, how do I know if certain systems are legal, is it just whether or not it has a muffler and resonator?

I feel like the answer to this question is dependent on what engine you have. If you're doing a axle back on a stock d16 its going to sound as good as you expect.

Both systems are reversible. A cat back keeps your oem catalytic converter so in that sense they also stay legal. The only thing that would make one illegal is a local city ordinance on sound pollution and your set up being louder than legally allowed in your area.
axle back is really only for sound. You’re typically being restricted still performance wise by the pipe from the cat to the axle back. A cat back will usually have larger diameter piping from the cats back giving you a little more power. Most catbacks aren’t going to be loud enough to cause issues. It’s when you add a straight pipe and remove the cats when a car is typically going to get really loud.

Unless it's a mazdaspeed, turbo 3, mx-5, or rotary powered do not spend money on performance upgrades on a Mazda.
