Clutch replacement

Have any of you guys replaced a clutch on a 2010 outback? It's starting to go out, the clutch hasn't been replaced in 150 thousand miles so its about time. But if you have replaced one on 2010-14 outback please pm me

Ive done a few clutches in the past but not in an Outback. Get you a Chiltons manual or check YouTube. Sometimes some good resources there. Good luck!

I haven’t but I’m inspired. My friends S4 clutch needs replacement again and I’m sure mine won’t last either. I figure the cars I have now are going to be my forever cars so might as well learn.

get the car up on jackstands, a jack or two to lower trans, I think we can do this.

its a big job for sure, just need to watch chrisfix and we'll be good

Highly recommend getting 3-5 ton jackstands.


did the clutch on my golf r with 1 ton jackstands from Walmart... needed to put the stands on blocks to be able to get the trans out.


also get a transmission jack from harbor freight, I used it then returned it after

I tried swapping the transmission in a 2004 Forester and it ended up being a huge pain. I would have had to pull the front half shafts, which requires unbolting some of the front suspension. Don't remember why since it's been a few years. But I didn't have an impact to break some bolts. Ended up paying a shop to do it instead.

yeah the AWD system gets in the way a lot, Im starting to think my slave cylinder has gone bad. Clutch isn't slipping just really weird bite point feel and shifting is a bit clunky

Any leaks? My slave cylinder gave out in Home Depot parking lot I spent a week trying to flush/replace it, in the end idk if it was me or prior shop (I assume prior shop cuz they used non-oem TORX bolt) but the thread to top slave cylinder bolt was stripped so trans had to be dropped to helicoil the threading in top bolt, idk it was a disaster that could have possibly been prevented if I didn’t ignore some drops

Ideally you’ll just need a new clutch and throw out bearing. If you’re not familiar with pulling axels you’re much better off just taking it to a shop.

For the amount of time and struggle it will take you, you're better of just taking it to a mechanic.

idk its just been weird the other day it was doing fine but now, clutch is groaning and creaking sometimes on 1st gear starts, clutch pedal extremely light but no slippage. I think its a loose pressure plate spring and a bad slave cylinder

Depends on the person. Some people like figuring their way through problems like this and getting their hands dirty while learning some new stuff. When I get a new car, I can't wait to take my current daily car's engine and transmission out to give it a thorough rebuild.

2 grand, seriously? Last time I got a clutch redone it was ~750 CAD

you need either a car lift or you're gonna need an engine puller + tons of tools. I've worked on subies a bit you're gonna need to be down to get stuck, frustrated, and wish you took it into a shop... up to you tho the journey can be fun ! first one is the hardest !
