Old beginner needs a little help

To start, plenty of people snowboard who are older than you! My mom taught me how to snowboard when she was your age. That was a good while ago haha. But I do understand the tired of bending down thing.

If you've never skied before, 174s will be way better at first. But if you're athletic and have been snowboarding a while, you've watched a lot of skiing happen. I think subconsciously you have a base, causing you to learn fast and yearn for a bit more than just the groomers. You'll certainly get used to maneuvering the 182s around and the Pioneer has a decent bit of rocker, so they won't even feel that long at all, honestly. I mean hell, people used to be crazy just for skiing skis that were UNDER 200 cm long!

If you even have an inkling of a thought that it might be better to grow into the longer pair, go for it. You'll be fine and probably will continue to like them more and more as you ski more. Have fun man! Don't fully give up snowboarding ;)

I won't give up snowboarding. But I'm yearning for a new challenge.

What a rabbit hole this subject is. The only thing on which there is consensus is that paying a custom boot fitter to size you correctly and make adjustments is always worth the money.

You'll be happier with 180+ in the long run.

The 182 will be fine probably. Unless you get a stiff directional ski (usually has a metal layer), then you could size down.

id personally say 182, would be a better investment in the long run. like someone else said, it might make starting out a lil harder since you got more ski but once you get comfortable it’ll feel a lot better. i’m 5’7 and my first skis, 174 armada declivitys, were fun for like the first week or the season and then i wanted sum bigger. i ride 178-186 now hahah

CP99Hi. I'm looking for some size advice.

Just getting into skiing. Have years as a snowboarder but tired of bending over to fuss with bindings. And too few people my age ride a board. Time for a new skill.

Live in Colorado and that's where I'll be doing all my skiing. 48 years old, 6 feet tall, male, 225 pounds, athletic. I'll stick to groomers.

I want to pick up 2024 skis on sale. I went to Golden to visit Icelandic in person. A google search says either 174s or 182s. Salesperson suggested Pioneer 174's. I'm wondering if 182's would be better. Maybe more difficult initially, but perhaps better to grow into? When I got into snowboarding I used a board that was too small. Not fun.

This would be equivalent to skiing on the 174. After you learn the basics you'd be over flexing the shit out of them.

Go with the longer sticks. You are taller so the 182s are the proper size for you. Some say go shorter while you are learning but I think it is better to learn on a ski you can progress with.

182. You’re around 183cm tall and Icelandic’s are like 2cm shorter so really a 181. The others will be 174. It’s tough to say because many outgrew skis pretty fast if they gear their gear towards learning. But then again, you don’t want to have gear hold you back because you’re not quite at that level.
