VT_scratchsea to sky gondola getting cut... twice...
860media*Killington Gondola
midwestcoastThe story is far too long so I'll just give the highlights.
Few years ago I rode the lift with an older guy at Vail and he wouldn't quit talking. Told me he was a lawyer, I wasn't surprised. By to top of the lift, it turns out we knew a handful of people in common from my hometown. I said we needed one more lift ride to chat it up so we skied a lap and hopped on another chair (dude shreds for a 70 year old). He then proceeded to tell me, not only was he a lawyer, but he was a high level executive for Nascar, now retired. He was responsible for Nascar's merchandise licensing deals and network TV rights - we're talking hot shit!
We were having so much fun chatting stories about our mutual friends, I offered to buy him a beer. He told me to follow him, he knew a good place to get a drink and quick bite. We ski down to Vail Village base area, and I think we're headed to one of the usual watering holes. Instead of a bar, he leads me to his home, about a 3 minute walk from the base of the gondola. Fucking primo, dream house location! His wife makes us gin and tonics and a sandwich, and we hang out all afternoon just shooting the shit.
He now lets me park at his house if he's in town, and I make sure his and his wife's skis are always tuned and waxed. We ski together every once in a while still, but he's unfortunately slowed down in the five years since I met him. Despite the 40 year age difference, he's one of the coolest guys I've ever met, and he gives me so much life and business advice I could start a blog.
midwestcoastDoes anyone here remember 36 hours of Keystone? I was underage, so didn't drink, but that was insane. Straight debauchery in the gondola. And the mountain. And the parking lot.

VT_scratchelaborate. what is 36hr OK?
860media*Most legendary thing I've heard... Some un named friends use to case race the Killington Gondola from Skyeship Base terminal up to the summit. Around 15mins, 30 beers, ending with 6 people not feeling too hot getting off at the top.
Farmville420One of the most degenerate gondolas itw, I learned about every drug I currently know from riding in there hahaha
midwestcoastKeystone kept the lifts spinning for 36 hours straight. Teams of 3-4 would have to have at least one person skiing the entire 36 hours. All the teams that finished were entered into a drawing for $3600.
Only lasted for like 4 or 5 years before the pulled the plug. Was definitely dangerous, and I'm surprised it even happened under Vail's ownership. There's a certain point where everyone is drunk and tired so most people just start straight-lining runs to conserve energy...

FunnelUpper Gondi at Mammoth, could tell these guys were bummed we jumped in at mid-chalet. Toward the top, one dude says “Not enough powder on the mountain today!” Takes a few key bumps. Thats all.
