I know these kinds of people well, the people who went to university and never left. That girl you see on Instagram who always seems to be attending charity balls or is on holiday and you never know what kind of job she does. I've talked about this here before. We pay far too little for food. Food expenses as a portion of income have been incredibly low for the past few decades. This is due to subsidies and cheap immigrant labor. Immigrants frequently work in the US and send a significant chunk of their earnings home. This is bad for the US for obvious reasons. Subsidies are incredibly inefficient and encourage overproduction of a small variety of foods, regardless of what the actual demand is. This also has environmental consequences that aren't adequately being priced in.
Another effect of overly low food costs is high housing costs. 100 years ago people spent around 2x as much on food as on housing. As food has decreased in cost, people just end up spending that money on housing instead; now housing costs around 3x as much as food.
I'd be happy to pay significantly more for food. I believe that the things keeping food prices low overall hurt us more than they help us. Outsourcing the bottom of our economy is not good for our stability, resiliency, or long term health of our economy. Handing farmers a blank check to produce as much corn and beef as they can comes with a huge tax burden and destroys our country's land. We would be better off with an industry that employs Americans and a government that only intervenes in times of crisis to keep supply and prices stable.

but to be fair, industrial farming cows is vastly different than domesticated cows 6000 years ago. the whole process is controlled these days. my sister lives on a huge farm in the middle of kansas and i was just there this last weekend and they were showing the family farm to my new gf. they have 250ish cows they send to slaughter annually. (thats a pretty medium size herd as they are large scale for the cash crops of corn, wheat, milo, barley, etc.) they start by looking at a catalog of bulls that have project weight yeilds and they purchase the semen for around $20 a pop. they put that in the heffers they kept by manipulating the females mating cycle (basically a giant rubber iud) so they all give birth in march. then then are on their moms for the summer and come october they are weaned off and power fed hay and a medical concoction (hormones and more!) to make them bigger more efficiently. once they get to weight they are sold to a feed lot. from here they are no longer given the ability roam. they literally only have room to stand or eat. its a mainly corn diet that also has a medical cocktail to make them gain as much weight as possible before going to the slaughter house. these feed lots is where the meat loses all its flavor. the cows are eating a diet that is very much so unnatural for them along with the meds/hormones so they emmit sooooo much more shit and toots that releases an unruly amount of methane. its astronomically more per cow than 6000 years ago and these feed lots have excessively more cows than they did 6000 years ago. the feed is way more energy consuming than a grazing cow too.
my brother in laws family said grass fed cows take 2 years to get to size compared to their industrial farming methods. also, my sister got an animal chemical science degree from kansas state and used to work in a lab whos entire goal was to make pharmaceuticals for cows so that they can handle the feed lot diet and hormones. she sells houses now lol so if your in the market for a house in central kansas, holler at yo boi!!

naw but an international traveling, industrial raised cow requires a lot of resources and emits a lot of waste. also the caloric intake of cows vs the caloric output of the beef is pretty shitty so we are producing alot of feed for cows when it could be for humans.
i eat a shit ton of beef and chicken so im not preaching to go vegan or anything but totally worth noting
VTshredder69I learned a few months ago that 80% of USDA inspected beef comes from South America. Are you buying beef that says "raised in America". That's pretty hard to find and the only way you're actually buying local.

We only import around 25% of our beef and most of that does not come from central/south America.
Now i remember where i fucked up. It's grass fed beef that is 80% imported. Almost all beef in America is grainfed.
