Circling back to say, after reading the comments, that if you don’t get some marginal enjoyment from your job (whether blue collar, white collar, whatever) - then you’re in for a rough ride. Work will constitute a large part of your life, whether you like it or not.

I share this opinion. The world isn't as black and white as it can sometimes feel like when comparing things like "blue collar" to "white collar." There are endless nuances and there will always be very happy people and very disappointed people on both sides. Thinking back to my younger years (I'm 38 now), I remember people telling me to do what you love, but that always kind of felt like this fantasy answer that didn't hold much weight in reality. That said, I think I took that advice more seriously than a lot of my peers. The past 20 years of my life have had some major ups and down personally, professionally, financially, etc, but what stayed consistent was making decisions based on what I wanted to do. What's important is only up to you. If being a broke ski bum is what you want to do, that's what you should do. I went to business school, and it's a fair argument that I could have way more money right now if I skipped ~10 years of relatively broke ski bum lifestyle, but if I had a chance to go back, I'd do it all over again. These days, I live a comfortable (though far from lavish) lifestyle and get to keep doing what I love to do. (If you're interested I work in marketing in the ski industry and am a part-time freeski coach).

You’re definitely right.
I worked briefly in my degree field as a paralegal and bc I can’t sit still, it definitely affected me mentally. After being laid off from said job (which was right before my 25th birthday lol), I had a day or two to sit myself down and figure out what I really wanted to do with my life. I ended up getting a job during the middle of winter at a random ski shop and this is when I started to develop a passion for bootfitting. I’m at a different shop now, but I’m about to go into my second season of custom bootfitting and it’s definitely paying just as much as my last 9-5 desk job did, with some better perks and incentives. Of course, I fill the void in the summers now by doing blue collar jobs.
I can’t say that I’m living lavish, though, but just enough to where I can live and afford the basic necessities without having to resort to moving back in with my parents in my late 20s.
ramlaKramlaJHe didn't get the message that the most important asset in life is your skis. The key to happiness
Funny thing is he will never be anything in whatever his career choice is, he will never have enough money to be free, he might have a girl for a while, but he will never have any remarkable assets either.
Update me on this in 50 years
Who are you? How much you make a Year? Can you even Cork 7? Please post an edit. Post a pic of your long time GF too.
theabortionatorHonestly not hating but not even sure what he's trying to say honestly. Like people that go to hood and camp for the summer? Idk, that shits pretty tight honestly. Maybe some random other dig? Idk, I guess at least it's not racist/homophobic. So probably a win
Bruh do you not have reading comprehension skills? Read the shit with your eyes then think with your brain ya deadbeat. You're an admin here and you're denying the Bum nature of the Sport.
BLandzIdk man, I understand what he’s saying but some of the chillest/cool dudes I know are ski bums hahaha. If thats what truly makes you happy and you’re a good dude I don’t see a problem with it, as long as you aren’t delusional and be a bum to avoid responsibility
ALL BUMS ARE DELUSIONAL & AVOIDING RESPONSIBILITY. A Bum is a FAILED MAN.
bigcat. That's pretty ironic coming from the dude who invests in scams, works at whole foods, has no upward mobility in life and was never good at skiing.
Post an edit dummy. Then post your last Paycheck. C'mon lil dawg.
LonelyBro is saying this but works at whole foods and has beef with 14 year olds for his insta page
You understand that WholeFoods offers advancement in the company (which I've already moved up in), 401K, Health insurance, Dental Insurance, Accident insurance, short term & long term disability, PTO, HSA, etc. But I didn't know you were 14. Shit my bad lil dawg.
muffMan.L Take, just be happy if someone is content in life. Don’t take out someone’s flame cause you’re miserable
Definitely not skiing how I did in college, but also am happy as hell with what I’m doing now. I do miss going multiple days a week vs once a week plus occasional weekend trips.
I’d never shame someone for doing what they love. I do miss the three years I bummed, but I also personally didn’t like scrounging for rent money and unexpected vet bills. Not saying it can’t be done but didn’t work for me.
Key note, if you want to ski bum don’t get pets.
You called it an L take but ended up agreeing with me. Good Job idiot.

I'm Jalmar and I'm part of the Swedish royalty and I live in Kalmar. Enough to buy a bag of candy every friday. Nah, mommy said it's too dangerous. Carving and straight air edit coming in 2025. I'm a solitary man(don't care enough rn)
Buddy I’m just gonna leave these two comments together.
Sam also lives in Salt Lake and has a normal job, last I checked. Not what I’m talking about at all but way to miss it. Plus, if he had/does have a 6 figure job - do you think he wants you broadcasting that?
X_ANKILLAYou understand Sam Zahner has a 6 figure job, has a house, and is engaged. You dummies aim too low.

flexing ur Whole Foods promotion to a free skiing forum full of 17 year olds acting like u the mark cuban of Newschoolers is a crazy way to make a point on “not being a bum”

Wait so all this judgement and condescending bullshit... and you work at Whole Foods? Not job shaming... I just expected you to have more to brag about. Why are u such a jerk? You're practically in the same boat as these bums you're hating on lol.
“I’m not a ski bum, I work at a grocery store” has to be one of the funniest things I’ve ever read on this site. That’s one of the most classic ski bum jobs. That’s what I did when I was living the bum lifestyle lmao

Also posting a pic of your gf to show off to a bunch of ski nerds is hilariously insecure
if you are taking advice from this guy, just remember that his idea of “success” is having a gf (very normal) and working at a grocery store. And we’re the ones who are supposed to aim higher???

Do you think he would be telling me if he didn't care if people knew. Use your brain.

I make way more than these bums and have my life put together. Let me know when your gear is in the Games and Pros are asking for custom gear from you.

I've worked for the company for years. I've moved up in the company. My pay is increasing. My boss told me that he's gunna groom me for his position when he transfers. So likkamahballsson.
