What are your ski-related bucket list items? On-snow dreams and aspirations? Two-plank experiences that are worth pursuing and likely to produce durable happiness?
I’m setting long-term goals and am seeking inspiration. Thanks in advance.
Probably meeting some of my favorite skiers and getting to have a full convo with them on their perspective and how they see things in skiing and outside of it. Joona Kangas would be my first choice
transition away from regular career path into a more skiing focused lifestlye. find a way to make it sustainable. Do a winter in Bozeman in the near future. get into touring. ski the southern hemisphere + australia + japan. move from Minnesota to out west. fully develop my trick bag
SlowbroI'm getting a bit old but I want to land a dub. And a flip onto a rail
bro ive always wanted to do a flip into or out of a rail. it's the kind of thing that would only happen if i got to hit the same perfect setup for it a thousand times and finally go for it when i felt it. almost certainly not going to happen at this point now, getting old.... but def let me know if you give er a shot dog i'd love to live vicariously through you
SofaKingSickvery attainable. what tricks can you currently do/what are you most comfy with?
I can spin all 360s. And front flip. My most comfortable spins are right 540, and front flip. I almost never miss anymore w those two. My first backie went 3/4s around and I never tried one again after that lol. I wa thinking maybe a forward/bio cork or a misty would be most doable

oh jeez well shows how different we all can be. front flips are scary and blind to me while backies are the most natural thing in the world. but yeah sounds like a misty would be very attainable for you if you got fronts locked-- you just add a little spin (and can spot your landing!)
re: corks and 5s, you think you could start corking those 5s? i learned cork 3s and 5s by just carving hard into them and progressively adding more and more of a dip to the takeoff. maybe you should try that
Mont-blanc to chamonix is 15,000 feet, but most years you can’t ski all the way down to the town, so closer to 13,000. There are tons of 10,000+ descents all over the alps, and some are within resorts and lift serviced I believe. I don’t know if there’s anywhere in the US you could do this, as mentioned before Mt. Rainer would probably by the closest you could get within the lower 48.

Mont Blanc summit to Chamonix is closer to 12,000 ft. Is it a doable climb in winter when it would need to be done to ski down to a low enough elevation? From what I've read it's usually only a summer/fall climb. Highest lift access descent in the world is less than 9,000 ft (which is at Chamonix). But maybe it's possible to climb 1000+ ft higher up Mont Blanc from the top of the lifts during winter?
I'm not so sure that's correct that there are a ton a of 10,000 ft + descents that are possible in the Alps. Seems there are very few (possibly none besides Mont Blanc?) that would be doable without large traverses/climbs as part of the route down.
The best mountain in the world for an actually skiable top to bottom descent over 10,000 ft is probably this one here. Maybe the only place in the world a 15,000 ft descent would be possible. But it;s in Russia and is an active volcano where people have been killed by flying lava..

Yeah I kinda exaggerated a lil and didn’t check, thx for getting it right. That volcano looks insane, Kamchatka is a super overlooked part of the world

Yeah they’re blind unless you lawn dart them… which makes them even more scary sometimes haha. Idk they just feel more natural to me.
I’m hoping to get a lil more sendy this season, and take your advice. I wish the fridge would build a bigger jump so I could try them all summer but that would be disastrous for the heads that ski there 😂
Idk how people pull off fridge flips, I am always fighting for my life to get/maintain speed lol

I’ve done it a few times back when the jump was bigger. But now I just avoid the jump entirely because the lip is always beat so fast, and if you’re not freshly waxed u ain’t really goin no where. Take base cleaner to the bottom of your skis after you go and look at all the black soot that comes off.
That’s weird, last time I waxed before going into the fridge I could pretty much walk up hill. Then I went without waxing and was flying, and this last time I went without waxing and was back to walking up hill :/ must be a perfect medium or something. But props to you for sending a fridge flip. And you would think after 4+ years of operation they would’ve figured out the perfect jump and stuck with it. It changes almost daily and it’s a gamble whether it works or not

I mean, they can't really put big features because the majority of riders are brand new beginners and a jump big enough to practice flips on would probably kill someone lol.
As for waxing, were using universal temperature wax at my shop in Yorktown, not the wax the fridge offers. Our wax seems to be working just fine.

Bruh idk what it is but ever since last summer the snow there has made my bases filthy every time I’ve went. The snow there NEVER used to do that until the Canadian wildfires took place last summer and all that smoke came down heavy onto NYC. Now all that dirt and shit is just stuck in the snow lol. I know they blow new snow in there every now and then but it’s crazy it’s still around. There’s no way annything else could be the culprit.

Honestly, we cant figure it out either. I think it has to do with 1. The snow never really melts, it just gets moved around over and over. 2. Dirty ski bases from outside mountains (and possibly wild fires) 3. Heads are now putting WD40 on their bases to get them to slide better on the indoor snow.
Bros who want to go to BC to ski: Please do it! I lucked-out one season when I was coaching IFSAJ Freeride and got to go to BC twice. Kicking Horse and Whistler. Changed my whole outlook on mountains and skiing. Wild places and some of the biggest mountains you'll ever see. I still think about the Purcells and the Kootenany Sea a lot.
I have never skied in a fridge, but I would imagine the snow would be quite crystalline + the AC keeping the air super dry means it probably requires a much colder wax than the ambient temp. Just a guess though....it would be a fun experiment
