honestly seems like a more funded jib league type thing which is great i think. winter and summer leagues, an industry wide draft, contracts, global events, so much good stuff. with the overall goal being to make our industry more sustainable it seems like a really good idea. could make action sports a really cool place to be for the foreseeable future.

From my understanding. They’ve just turned it into 4 contests through out the year? Still just going to be top dogs involved. Doesn’t seem like they’re trying to open the contests up to more people and give more opportunities necessarily. Just a way to give more consistent money to the top guys in the sport. Sounds like a great idea just will be interesting to see how the “teams” are set up. Could see there being some issues with teams and skiers with different sponsors.

Yeah now that I’m thinking about it I feel like the x games one will be just the top level comp people who weren’t necessarily going to jib league anyway. Jib league will hopefully stick around for the non or mid level comp skiers and lesser known people.

I fuck with it, more money in the sport to support those pushing it. Seems like jib league inspired them a bit but as everyone was saying they will have different crowds and vibes. I think there is a place for it and it will be good for skiing overall.

To me it's almost like X-Games is trying to take a bite off the esports pie??? "MSP and X Games will secure investors for these new teams." Why would they need investors? Has anyone told them that E-Sports is already flawed as a business? If they did something like a JOSS edit that would be sick but instantly this approach is flawed. X-Games as a company is probably already going bankrupt. TV slots cost too much and they ain't making much money off YouTube live streams... Maybe if they promoted their streams a bit better and stopped trying to zoomer-fi it, then the streams would be watchable.

This is obviously X-Games' way of saying they need more ways to get companies to sponsor their events to pay for stuff. There will probably be like a Redbull team, etc. BUT the reason this approach is flawed is there is no real way for these companies to generate revenue off this. X-Games can't pay the companies back when they're the ones trying to get sponsored... Or atleast their ROI (advertising from athletes participating and us buying products) isn't going to be nearly what X-Games is probably pitching. CS:GO BARELY works cuz during majors they sell sticker capsules, teams and players generate money off of the stickers sold. But majority of video games esports always fail cuz they don't ever have systems like these.

Sports or events like Formula 1 work cuz there's years of history and hundreds of millions of people watch these events. Also a lot of gambling that ends up generating money. Action sports is already niche nowadays and split between each discipline. People only would watch X-Games to see people get bodied but now everyone is landing their tricks so it's really only the diehard fans/adrenaline junkies watching anymore.

I like that they're shaking things up/trying something new, and the idea here seems really cool but I'm still unclear on the logistics of creating these "teams". I'm confused who will be managing/funding/selecting the athletes?

Yeah the nick geoper supermax kind of fucked them in this new CBA, they pretty much only have space for vet minimum role riders. Going to be interesting to see what they can do in the draft this year.

X games has been dead in the water for years, over a decade easily. They rode the wave out of the late 90s early 00s and peaked like in mid 2010s. Whenever ACTION SPORTS started being put in the Olympics is around the time the vibe changed for X games and aside from showcasing top level athletes talent for a niche audience, the whole production has been SO FUCKING CORNY LATELY.



I think the collapse of ESPN is also tied into this, like X games got dragged down by the sinking ship.

Anyway I think this is a last gasp attempt to rebuild the X games brand by riding the social media aspect of ACTION SPORTS as hard as possible. Before social media, skateparks were full of weird kids and crusty dudes calling each other retards and faggots. Now skateparks are full of scooters, women with hairy armpits on roller skates, and n00bs who decided to start skating because of tik tok and are going to quit within a year.

I think Leagues will feature top notch talent no doubt, but will have an insufferable corniness that will alienate the HARDCORE ACTION SPORRS AUDIENCE and the non hardcore audience won’t give a fuck because they are watching for 2 seconds on Instagram reels in between OF girls and car crashes.

Meh, I'm all for it. It can't get worse from a standpoint of riders compensation and recognition for athletes participating in any competition. As much as everyone likes to gate keep in the ski world, overall live sports viewership and revenue deriving from sports has exponentially increased in the last 10 years (I mean pickleball is a thing now) while viewership for ski/snowboard competitions has decreased by approximately 50% since 2018. We're talking a decrease of 90% since the glory days of 2008-2012. We tried our best with our technology in a relevant way that represents skiing/snowboarding to it's core and tbd if it's going to be implemented in future broadcasts or not (in an obviously different manner), but this is a different take that I think could allow me to put on this event with friends who aren't in tuned with the ski/snowboard world.

Sources that I've seen have X Games raising $100M in capital for this, so lets see where this goes. More capital infused into skiing/snowboarding = more money for skiers and snowboarders at the end of the day. You're making the pie bigger, and aligning the money infused into the sport with the people driving it and making it relatable to the way the mass consumer looks up to (in terms of the teams aspect).

It's still a year or two away, so lets see what happens!

Prob over-optimistic of me, but I think it's the best attempt to capture a mainstream audience we've seen in years. That's one of the biggest issues free skiing has. It's incredibly cool—as gnarly and exciting as F1 or football or whatever—but the whole niche action sports thing has been impossible to shake, which has made the whole viable career thing for athletes pretty shaky. It's absolutely bonkers to me that someone who can do a triple cork earns significantly less than a pro golfer or pro tennis player. We're ultimately held back by the viewership problem.

But this whole teams things has a lot of potential. Teams are a big part of the draw for mainstream sports, as viewers can attach themselves to a team of choice. When they win, you're stoked. When they lose, you're bummed. There's stakes for viewers, and stakes make things exciting.

The average skier doesn't know or care about how a random pro performs at X Games. They might care how team whatever does over the course of a season, though. Personally, I remembering how I invested I got in F1 after watching that Netflix show. I don't know anything about cars or racing, but I picked a team I liked, and suddenly F1 was digestible. I didn't have to keep track of all the intricacies. My team winning=good. Same with football which I usually never watch. When my local college team made it to the championships, I could get invested and actually watched a couple games.

One off free skiing events with debatable stakes that require niche sports knowledge to understand where never going to really make it big. But XGL, if they format it right, has a shot. I'm stoked about it and hope it succeeds/creates new opportunities for skiers. Maybe that's overly optimistic of me.

Do you know how the team selection works? Is it company/sponsor based or some other type of organization? I.e - is Alex Hall going to be skiing for 'Team Monster' or for like the 'Salt Lake City Blizzards' or something like that?

If the former, I don't think this will change much. If the latter, this could be really really cool.

Saw some great questions being asked about these leagues coming about. Will we then start to see Riders Associations much like the the major professional leagues (NFLPA, NHLPA, etc.), Insurance for riders, abilities to bargain for contracts from sponsors and/or the leagues and teams should they become a thing? Or will it just be "Go out there and huck your meat to make the sponsors happy" kind of stuff. Sure, pro skiers and snowboarders are making a lot more money than they used to but it pales in comparison to what these brands are making.
