I was watching some og 2000s edits and I’ve really noticed how many boxes there were, at almost over resort there was a crazy challenge box but nowadays the only challenge box I know is from henriks park. I always thought this was just skier getting better and not needing box’s anymore but are there more reasons?
boxes certainly have their uses but i think as a skier progresses and gets more comfortable, rails become preferred
at northstar, the beginner parks are filled with boxes but the bigger parks might only have a couple in total
snowfinderCould be a liability thing too, seen the worst crashes on boxes.
have seen boxes where the lexan totally lifted up and even screws that have backed out and can catch edges. definitely lots of opportunities to get sketchy

that's how i feel about them. less impressive than a rail but somehow sketchier sometimes. and more material/labor to make i would think
Farmville420Harder to maintain, I'm a box truther though I think they are way more practical for progressing than tubes

i hear that, i used to be garbage at rails too
Tubes aren't rails lol, also not even what I meant. Boxes occur in the streets often, tubes dont. Way higher chance you see a ledge than a fat 2 foot diameter milly tube in the streets, therefore it's more practical

i was just talking shit for no reason but yeah you're right that boxes do actually resemble a common street feature, ledges, which is a good argument for their ubiquity
Ah big boxes are fun. Place near me used to have big box transfers.
Also whale tale used to be more common. Rail whale tail claimed bodies by the week now parks are more designed for people who just plan on doing side hits all day.
The MOAB (mother of all boxes)(aka 10 gallon box) shamelessly stolen from the one Mammoth had in the bdog resurrected edit
The maintenance isn’t as bad if you just eat the upfront cost of using 1/2” plastic instead of 1/4”, then you can bolt the plastic on instead of screws and it doesn’t warp in the sun nearly as bad

1/4" plastic is just a waste of everyone's time and money. That still makes them much more expensive and more difficult to make than rails which is a big reason they aren't as common anymore.
Plus, large tubes are more fun for just about all skill levels than boxes.
That box looks really fun though.

IMO there are too many tubes now and it gets mad boring when every single feature is a big fat tube
I’d personally love to see more resorts putting in proper ledges made of concrete or pavers or something else of the sort. Would be a cool experience for someone learning how to hit more street spots or for street veterans to get down on and session on something gnarlier.

Same here I tried to film tricks on handrails and square rails this year when I could. I was surprised at how much I liked wider square rails. Scary but fun to do surface swaps on

these tend to crack really easy and are really bad for bases/edges. We had one at one like 10 years ago and it was not that that fun, required a ton of wax to get to slide and even then almost nobody hit it.
Big boulder used to have a few that had steel angles on the corners with concrete in the middle and those were alright, but normal boxes just make more sense for resorts.
hi_vis360Boxes need to make a comeback. Loaf had some sick af box setups this spring like a huge up box and some other interesting ones
That up box was sick but the plastic on top got all way from the sun. It was great to wall ride the sides though. the hockey stick rail next to it was more fun.

I like where your head is at but concrete ledges thrash your skis so fucking hard, they’re so fun in the streets but if they were in parks I don’t think I could afford to hit them purely from a financial standpoint

I’d love a tall box that you can ride on from the top of a knuckle and it leads to a 5-10 foot drop. I do agree that concrete would be weird to put in a park but if there were more ledge-style box features that would be nice.

armchair_skierBoxes are also slowly sinking into the ground over time. Every year they get set in lower and lower by park crew.In 5 years they might be gone.
