Career change

After 20 years of teaching 7th and 8th grade math, I’m throwing in the towel. I need a change to alleviate stress and provide a better work life balance. Give me some possible career paths that could replace my income. Living in the Midwest so resort work (it’s tiny) isn’t really an option.

Maybe you would enjoy being like a Park Ranger or an educational outreach coordinator- something like that where you’re background experience is still relevant

Let's hear more about what you don't like about teaching? I assumed a lot of people would argue there is a solid work-life balance including summers off. What type of work schedule are you interested in?

consider working at a college. If you currently work at a public school you might be able to keep paying into your same retirement if you switch to a public college or university, at least that is how it is in Oregon. Good chance you already are qualified to teach college level math (Math 060 covers fundamentals like addition with whole numbers) . Or become an admin. With a math background you can get your foot in the door in the business office or financial aid office and work your way up

What dont you like about the work life balance? Thats the reason everyone I know loves teaching. Summers+spring break+ Holidays+Winter break off is pretty impossible to beat outside of teaching.



If you are looking to still be in education, there are a ton of sidesteps you can do to get out of the classroom. Stepping into college or admin could be great too.

Idk about states in the Midwest but in Colorado there only needs to be at least 160 days of school per year, teachers get paid pretty shit tho (aside for boulder county and cherry creek)

I attended a lecture by Padmasree Warrior, she was speaking in one of the Strategy & Leadership courses @USC. She is a technologist and sits on the board for Microsoft and Spotify, she is generally a kick-ass human and has a baller resume you can look up if you care too.

Someone asked this exact question and her advice was to leverage your strengths, choose something that leverages 60,70,80% of your existing skills and puts your other foot into a new category. Ask ChatGPT or your favorite Ai to generate a list of potential career swaps that leverage your past experience as a teacher/coach/mentor.

my mom just went international for her teaching, she was burned out but shes saying international teaching is way better than than in US and you get to travel, if not join conservation core and build trails.
