Skier killed attempting a road gap on berthoud pass
I don't ever want to hear any banter about Colorado kids not sending it ever again. Super gutted about this, knowing some of his friends I'll make sure his legacy and spirit live on however that may be. Starting by naming the gap "Dallas" but beyond that. Berthoud has taken a lot of lives, but this one is so different.
death is always terrible. really hits hard when someone dies doing something we’re all so passionate about. to think someone went out stoked on a shot they were gonna get and never come home is fuckin tragic.

The absolute balls on this kid to attempt this are massive, and legendary. Most deaths at berthoud are due to avalanche, this kid went out attempting the most burly gnarly never been done gap known to man that would make Tanner hall quiver in his full tilts, and is a testament to Dallas's will and courage to send something with such high consequence. I will think about him sending this every time I cross berthoud pass now which is a historic cornerstone of the ski industry and culture in America. Heaven claimed a good one this week. Though I never knew him I respect the shit out of this kid. Can only imagine what insane feats and next level radness he would have gone on to conquer in his life had the snow been a tad faster that day or the wind a bit more at his back. This was one time you don't want the road to rise up to meet you, but I know his spirit will shred on in some form. Seems like he packed 12 lifetimes of sendiness into his 21 years on this rock. idk, considering how big that vertical drop is and how small and steep the landing is comparatively, it makes sense why it was built more like a step-down. Prayers to all his homies and families I cant imagine what they're going through

A friend of a friend from Albuquerque came up short trying to gap the Sandia crest road a few years back, ended up breaking his femur I think. And that gap has almost zero vertical drop, nowhere near as gnarly as this Berthoud one looks. Road gaps can def get real gnarly

Yup. It’s best just to move on. I know many aren’t familiar it with it but I prefer the r/cosnow subreddit and they’ve been making a thing lately about not being disrespectful. There will always be shitty people, especially when they can be anonymous.

I see so many people rolling around the mountain, even friends that are great riders, with mis-adjusted bindings and worn out boots. most of the time the consequences aren't as high as a road gap. But trees and rocks can kill at the speeds we ride at.
so go check your forward pressure, afd height and boot wear. Stay safe brethren

Long story short: he did everything right but had binding issues he overlooked and ski popped off on the run up. Sad all around.

yeah...my Mom actually read that and called me about it, not to talk about anything I'm doing, but for if I have kids someday who end up wanting to be pro skiers, and to think about that immense pressure that the article describes. If I have kids someday, I hope they don't want to be pros, this day and age, who wants the job, huge amount of risk for a comparatively small amount of money in all but very few cases.
Fuckkk, I remember hearing about this a while ago but re-reading all of it really hits close to home rn. just a couple weeks ago had a buddy from middle school pass in a car accident. death is so fucking horrible man its always the best, kind hearted people who go first. i know both of them are absolutely throwing down up there, prayers to the familys and friends.
So basically he was a comp. kid whose only goal in life was to "make it" in skiing and he decided the best course of action was to send a feature well above his ability and judgement levels with gear he didn't understand and shouldn't have been using.
When horrible stuff happens like this its not due to a single bad decision, its a compounding of bad decisions. The parents aren't to blame, the friends aren't to blame, it all comes down to the individual who ignored all the red flags. If it doesn't feel right, don't do it, it could save your life.
