Me and my dad have planned on skiing james peak for a while, and it just so happens that we get a blessed storm cycle beforehand and nearly no wind and bluebird when we plan to go. This got me wondering whether I should go for Shooting Star couloir. Its a 50-60 degree pitch and a "you fall you die" situation but the conditions are sooo perfect and I wanna do it. I've done couloirs with similar pitch but never this high consequence. You can see this coulior from the top of eldora so I could flex on everyone on the lift with me. Also, would it be worth it to bring an ice pick for self arrest or is it too steep for that.? someone console me
I dont know what your local avalanche forecast has to say, but usually most people save the "you fall you die" lines for a more stable spring snowpack. The terrain does look pretty gnar. (i looked at a picture)
Spring yes ice axe, right now for pow as you say, no ice axe, but other things might be useful...
When you go this weekend, film it, and we will recover the camera and footage later in the spring.
Making a NS thread about your backcountry decisions is kinda gaper moves. I can’t help because I’m pretty conservative in the backcountry, but sounds like an epic line. Enjoy and be safe
I just watched a video of some guys hiking and skiing it, looks like it gets a lot more gnarly the higher you get, for my money id hike until you shit yourself and see how you feel about skiing it then, the guys in the vid looked seriously underqualified and i genuinely thought it was gonna be one of those videos where you watch someone die. check avy warnings and assess the snowpack. tbh i think the hike looks more dangerous than the line unless you're experienced in hiking couloirs - looks wide enough to throw jumpturns the whole way down if you lose your marbles - except at the top where the guy in the video sideslipped for like 200m
My dad kinda shut down the idea of me skiing it which sucks because I tried to argue that I could make the final decision when I’m at the top, looking down at it. He said I couldn’t make good decisions at that altitude which is bulllllshitttttt, it’s barely a 13er. He’s done a ton of shit in the Himalayas where making decisions is actually an issue at the top of mountains but come on bro. At least let me consider it at the top. Oh well I guess I’ll ski sky pilot or something (couloir lookers right of shooting star)

probably for the better. It would be an insane and unforgettable experience but he sounds like he has some experience and like others said, it will always be there in the future too and the later you do it, the better of a skier you will probably be when you hit it.
