eheathI do not support what the Saudis have done in the past and continue to do now, but I do support athletes taking advantage of these Saudis and expanding their wealth.
For golfers/soccer players its certainly about generational wealth, but for these skiers attending this event, they have chosen to support their skiing career by participating in an event that pays far more than any other ski event. They're not selling their souls, it’s an appearance fee and an opportunity to win a solid chunk of cash.
Jemsit would be so cool if they invested that hoard of oil money into making their country better instead of wasting it on their greedy royal family or making themselves look better
like seriously the oil mogul states could be so much better if they didn’t have literally the greediest ruling class on earth

Farmville420Their wealth was created by being the greediest ruling class on earth, you don't get that rich by being a good person, nobody does. Every billionaire and trillionaire and most millionaires are just as psychotic as your average criminal, they just channeled their insanity in a different way.
Jemslike seriously the oil mogul states could be so much better if they didn’t have literally the greediest ruling class on earth

tinkytwinkyYou're an SJW on here every other day. Now we know how much your soul costs! Only $50k?! Get a real job before you spout anything else. Enjoy your defenseless position!

Jemsi hope this was ironic
tinkytwinkyHa! It's morality, not financial advice. Get off the keyboard and go read "Blood and Oil." Its clear you dont have a problem accepting money from a dictator that centralizes all of his countries wealth for his own behest, or uses slave labor to generate it. Dirty money. Amoral.

nCrowPretty sure almost every pro is out filming or at jib league right now
eheathI am fine with these skiers taking the bag, at this point we all know they're trying to sportwash but the athletes can take the money and still not support what the Saudis are doing, just like everyone else is doing.

PussyFinderyou should run for office bro
coronaYou do realize that taking the money and participating is absolutely supporting Saudi Arabia, right?
If there was a politician in the US who was promoting the death penalty for gays, that women must have a male guardian, that free speech is not allowed, etc, etc, and they were have a promotional rail jam for their campaign, how much money would they have to pay you to participate? Would you show up for 5k?
It's not like $100k is a life changing amount of money any more for someone from upper-middle class US or Europe (and most athletes will be getting $5k). Like there's no way in hell Colby Stevenson is hurting for money.
eheathWhat are the saudis getting out of this event? So far, to me, its been a constant barrage of people talking down on the event and others saying people should get paid. nobody is saying "wow the saudis must have really changed!!" and if anything, the awareness of their shitty practices, sexism and homophobia are elevated. we all think theyre awful still and will continue to do so. Maybe im missing something here, but i've never seen a positive take on the Saudis.
TBH i think theyre throwing away a shit ton of money on other sportswashing endeavors (LIV golf, premier league) and if some skiers get a piece of that pie, then good for them. I guess i just see the effect of the sportswashing to be moot, theyre throwing money at their problems and nothing is changing.
And its not about "hurting" for money, do you not ask your boss for a raise because you're not "hurting for money"? like come on man, these guys are doing everything they can to support themselves, you can be as critical as you want but in the end, these guys are only there to get paid, ski and move on.
PussyFinderWhy is a shame then?
coronaAren't you in the marketing/media business? You absolutely should understand what they're getting out of this. The Saudis are actively trying to diversify their economy and generate a more favourable look for themselves and one big part of that is tourism and sporting leagues. Events like this are part of the campaign to showcase their country to the world as a place that isn't just a desert full of oil and people stuck with outdated ideals. Having world class athletes (even washed up ones) that people recognize and look up to is a huge part of this, especially for changing how they're perceived by future generations who currently idolize these athletes.
Again, this is directly comparable to my previous example. How much would you have to get paid to be a star at a campaign event of a politician who is actively promoting the death penalty for gays?
SofaKingSickwell you'll never catch me hating on skiers for doing stuff to keep their career going
eheathThe term selling out is only used by young/immature people who haven't had to worry about financial responsibilities.
SofaKingSickcome on that's just not true. literally billions of people balance their values with their financial responsibilities. and i can go ahead and guess that at least once in your life you've shaken your head at someone for selling out. e.g. a politician
coronaI'll ask you this too then. Would you have any issues with a skier participating in a campaign event to help promote a politician who is actively promoting the death penalty for gays?
Jemslog out indefinitely
SofaKingSickwell i didn't say it was a shame, someone else did and your weird reply to him about WOKE, dumb americans etc is what i replied to
i definitely don't blame any of these skiers for going, especially the ones that don't come from rich families. you'll never catch me hating on skiers for doing stuff to keep their career going (e.g. dumb youtube videos and other social media crap), most of them put a lot more in to skiing than they get out
but i do think it's weird that on this subject a lot of people jump down people's throats for saying something even mildly negative about KSA's sportswashing. like really? it's that weird to you that people would have mixed feelings about this stuff? they're not staging a protest at athletes' houses or some crazy shit, theyre just vocalizing opinions
eheathYou can't blame anyone for saying yes to > 100m.
eheathI mean I explained pretty clearly that I don't believe what they are doing is working, I understand what they are doing man. I don't really have the desire to argue about it, you know my stance and I know yours, lets leave it at that.
tinkytwinkyYou're also making claims that people who use the word "sellout" dont have any financial struggles of their own? They are sellouts dude, that doesnt mean we dont make our own money or have struggles, we just dont look for handouts from people who rape, enslave, and kill in the open.
eheathYou completely missed my point, the people (you) who call skiers sellouts don't understand the financial situation said skiers are in. You may think they're just flowing in cash, some are, but most are simply doing everything they can to benefit from their career.
Nobody in skiing sells out, they're make money for doing something they love and most of the time people who don't like that are just jealous (not sure if thats you).

Nobody in skiing sells out, they're earning money for doing something they love and most of the time people who don't like that are just jealous (for the record i don't think that applies to you).

VV.XTREME.
Farmville420Hey man genuine question but have you ever accepted a US dollar as payment before? Because if you think Saudi Money is dirty, wait until you hear about the US Dollar.... or Euro, or pound, or yen, or rupee, etc. etc.
Not saying Bin Salman should avoid criticism for being a trash human but if you've ever voted for a US president you support the same moral injustices you are denouncing. Just saying.
theabortionatorThat doesn't really make sense though. Making a US Dollar for most people is just the currency we trade in. It has nothing to do with the government. There's a difference between a government paying you and just earning money within an economy.
Idk. Really not a great comparison.
eheathIts not that the saudis are getting taken advantage of, the athletes are taking the advantage to receive a bunch of money in exchange to just do the sport they already do, no strings attached, that's all i meant.
