climate change sucks big ass balls but the dudes using helicopters/snow machines in order to provide me with a solid movies absolutely 100% get a pass idgaf. Yea I think one of my biggest problems with a lot of big ski movies is that the focus is shifted more to the aesthetic of "pow skiing at the best locations on earth" and less about... the actual skiing. I'm not anti-travel necessarily, but I think you can usually convey the art and skill of your skiing pretty locally a fair amount of the time, especially if you live in *ahem* a western mountain destination like tahoe.

And street is definitely one of the best example of this. There's been some insane content coming out of whatever's in driving distance for like 4 dudes in a minivan or whatever

POW also living right up to the exact same name that politicians have despite acting like they're the status-quo and for the people. It's only about their careers and not about the people or the planet.

Meanwhile most of these brands these athletes ride for make their gear in sweatshops for pennies on the dollar and sell it high. But oh yeah, check out how cool the newest Salomon ski guys!

Most populated areas of England have pretty good quality public transit. If you don't want to pay to drive to city center take a bus. Don't let culture warrior types inhibit your ability to reason.

As for the movie...looks awful. I'm not sure how tgr keeps making movies but then again people will get excited about the latest marvel universe sequel "ant man 4” or whatever.

To me, this comes off as a really tone deaf video that's trying to rationalize a lifestyle that is ultimately using far and away more fossil fuels than the average global user. On top of that, it seems today that the role of a professional skier is to personify these activities that are heavily reliant on consumption resources as the sole source of the experience of "joy". I completely agree with Chris Rubens in the fact that individual change plays a role in better shaping the world we want to live in, especially from the people who have the resources (ie upper and upper middle class white people) to make that change. Now, we can't all become organic farmers, but it's important to fortify good decisions by individuals moving towards a "greener" world. By no means should we discredit the systemic problems, and the fact that fossil fuels have benefitted greatly from government lobbying, but we can't just ignore the contribution of individuals because we are only approaching it from a systemic point of view.

This is obviously a very multifaceted and complex issue that isn't going to be solved overnight. Fossil fuels are simply the cheapest way for us to get from one place to another...for now. Without gasoline, there wouldn't be a snowmobile. That may one day change, but it isn't going to come solely from a top down bureaucratic change. Sure, a systemic change will be a good thing, but from someone who has 15 years of experience in the energy industry, there just isn't a short term simple policy change that can be rolled out without some serious monetary impacts. In the long run it makes sense economically and environmentally, but humans are terrible at playing the long game, as exemplified in our current political shitshow. There are many great technologies coming out now, my company even works on several frontrunner solutions of hydrogen energy storage originating from renewable sources. It's an exciting time. However, we can all support these efforts with our own dollars, lifestyle choices, and political will. It's not an either or type of thing.

Having run in the same circles as "professional skiers" and having dabbled in that world myself, I seem to observe this dilemma that arises which I think this video tried to touch on. A lot of people in this community know and understand the real problems we face from climate change. However, they are indeed amongst some of the highest users of resources since skiing and upper middle class white people go hand in hand. With that said, that doesn't make you a bad person. I'm sure Amie is a good person who treats her community well and wants the best for it. Being a white middle upper class person, a hypocrite that uses resources while advocating for climate change, or not being passionate about the issue of climate change doesn't make anyone inherently a bad person. We really need to move away from these dogmatic approaches of judgment and singular ways of characterization. That's how we are going to build community. I don't think professional skiing is the platform for the stage of environmental change and if it were, we need to put the ones in the spotlight who are making real changes. Not saying we need to vilify or restrict anyone for chasing what they love, but let's not pretend like we aren't contributing the problem.

If they want to advocate meaningful change: make a rad ski movie in less than perfect conditions.

Teach people that skiing is fun in any snow conditions and in any location. Guide brands to make the lifestyle more accessible to young kids instead of catering to mid-life-crisis city folks.

Climate change is only one part in the delusion they are selling. They are preaching to kids that they can only have fun in high risk avalanche conditions and only if they are wearing snobby expensive brands. It makes kids turn their back on the sport because this is lame AF.
