ethannnI've been thinking about this and don't know what to believe
SofaKingSickyes, climate change is very real and will become a very serious issue. anyone who tells you otherwise is completely fucking retarded, but that doesn't mean you won't bump into them a lot
supremeblienteleYes and no. It’s definitely real and fucking our shit up, but there’s nothing you can really do about it. You can eat sustainably, bike to work, not use plastic etc etc etc but that’s not gonna stop mega corps, billionaires, retarded people and politicians from pumping co2 into our atmosphere.
Just gotta do what u can and accept it. Worrying isn’t gonna make ur situation any better tho.

CamobaGlobal warming is going to affect skiing a lot, but not until the end of the century so still another 80 years. Even then there will still be plenty of skiing options.
SlushSeasonHonestly even if the Western mega corps and billionaires stopped pumping CO2 into the air, we'd still be fucked. China, India, and soon also Africa just have so many people and the environment is so far down their list of priorities that they'll continue to fuck it up, with our without us.

little1337If you need an NS thread to determine if climate change is real or not, you got bigger fish to fry brotha
ethannndog no one cares i wanted to see other opinions. "bigger fish to fry" fuck you talking about

little13372nd post bait, I fear, but I’ll bite
You can’t have an opinion on climate change, you can either acknowledge it’s real, or are wrong.
PartyBullshiitCan’t control others but we can control ourselves. Just because others will keep doing bad doesn’t mean we can’t clean up. Anything is better than nothing. This nonsense of “well they won’t so why should we” needs to die.
JalmarKalmarWhere from did you pull this bullshit 80 years? More and more side effects are showing up already.
CamobaDepends on where you ski. Obviously there are already signs but living in Utah where resorts get 375+ inches of snow per year, there is still plenty of time to ski left.
SlushSeasonI'm not saying we shouldn't make our own efforts. But the common discourse is "we could totally solve this if not for Trump/Bezos/Taylor Swift!!"
In reality you need to crush Chinese industry and also incentivize India, Africa, and Southeast Asia to industrialize with the environment in mind.
JalmarKalmarUtah is too south to get +80 years of skiing if we stay on the same tracks. Arctic circle is the future of skiing
JemsI remember there being so much more snowfall and generally stable temperatures as a kid. I know it's just anecdotal evidence, but the continuous fucked ass weather is enough evidence to justify climate change being very real. It shouldn't the 40-50 degrees for almost 2 weeks in MONTANA in the actual middle of the winter.
mrk127How do you not already see the impacts of climate change?!? It's not some far future thing, it's happening NOW
ethannnBut what if ski mountains adapt and develop crazy snow makers by the time we really start to be affected by global warming
skietedavidsonHow does your ski mountain/hill look so far this winter?

IsaacNW82One of weirder things we are already seeing is although snowfall is decreasing overall, big years are getting bigger, but drought years are getting worse.
Two years ago, it basically didn't snow for two-ish months in a row in LCC. Last year it snowed 900 inches in Alta.
Avalanche educators and forecasters basically assumed D5 avalanches didn't happen in Colorado, in March of 2019 they had 3.
My best guess is this trend will only continue, I wouldn't be surprised to see mountains hit 1000" for the first time ever nor would I be surprised to see big western resorts unable to open natural terrain some years at all

SteezyYeeterthe only sensible answer here. acknowledging it is real while not being alarmist. 👍

egirl.skias someone who skis in vermont, you should know and recognize that the snowpack is noticeably worse that it was 10 years ago.
how many times in the last 3 years has MRGs base lodge flooded due to unprecedented midwinter rainfall??
I will not be surprised if Mad River Glen doesn’t open for the season sometime in the next 10 years.
The devastating truth is that climate change is real and has already had drastic effects on our snowpacks.
I guess you basically weren’t alive 10 years ago so…
SteezyYeeteryeah i was gonna clarify that i didn't mean to say it already hasn't started affecting skiing. obviously it has. winter here sux.
however saying MRG won't open at all is absolutely ridiculous. as many others have stated the weather patterns are going to get more extreme so there 100% will never be a season with no snow. i could see them closing shortly mid-season after the snowpack is wiped out though.
additionally, MRG start/opening dates have remained virtually the same since the 40s.
