I understand there is some confusion on the things I have ranted upon, and I intend to clarify , and be just chillin for a while.
Training and Strength Training are monumental for Freestyle skiing success. I rant about not working out in a gym, because I worked out on a job site like a slave my whole life. My angst comes from not getting to have professional workout regimens and professional trainers/coaches. Im jealous, and resentful, just like you are jealous and angry about the flight of the albatross.
Cross Training is crucial for staying in shape in the off season. Whether it be skateboarding, blading, scootin, riding a horse for all i care. You have to stay fit, and if working out in the gym is how you do it, You Do You.
Trampoline Time. As a kid, I would run into peoples backyards, and jump on their trampoline until they dragged me out. My sister did gymnastics, and I would ask to jump on the pro trampoline, and I was never allowed... I trained myself to tramp, and I can float in any direction on a singular axis. and I mean any. with just about any grab and shifty variation. air awareness like a cat, i land on my feet in the grass flipping off a tramploine. I can not double on a tramp, but I have learned some of the sets with a crash pad and everything at woodward. I have launched double backies from the tramp into the foam pit....
Foam Pit. My first backflip was at tuckermans ravine... instead of skiing the headwall, i partied and built a jump. It wasnt until a decade later that i used the foam pit at woodward. one session with the legendary seth morrison. the only thing the pit is really good for is a backflip, its not big enough to double... but getting comfortable with a backy, and a rodeo did happen during these sessions.
Air Bag Training. This is newschool, and Im just jealous/resentful I never got invited over twenty years, to get to train... at mount snow they had a demo bag and i was restricted, but two park rangers let me hit it before they took it down, twice. Learning safely is huge for your body to endure any type of recreational or professional ski career. not breaking a collar bone to learn a cork 7, for one session on an airbag? PRICELESS!
Water Ramping. This is where things get subjective. Hitting a water ramp once, doesnt mean you cant ever be a freestyle skier, that IS NOT WHAT I MEANT. At the aerial pool, which i did go to once at lake placid, and was not allowed to hit, and almost restricted from a railjam.... they train 100 times per trick. Seriously. For a week straight, they perform once trick, 100 times until it becomes trained, and that is whats safe to take aerials to snow! that is what i meant, and when freestylers go there, they follow the aerial coach rules, and yeah, they dont hit the quad. (im insane, and would take off the quad switch...) Apologize for being salty for ripping an untrained double and truly risking my neck....
On snow, is the where you put the tires to the road. whether you are building up tricks , or taking trained tricks to a kicker for the first time. Having the strength, air awareness, ability to spot landing, putting the landing gear down. It needs to be built up to, or it is absolutely very dangerous, for anyone.
Be safe, enjoy the ride, and Keep It Freestyle.
PEACE
