2017 Canyon or 2012 Ram 2500 outdoorsman

Hey guys,

I have a major dilemma. I need your help.

I have two sleds and hate trailers. constantly changing bearing lights tire blah blah blah.



I currently have a 2017 canyon 4x4 extended cab 6' box with 160,000 km worth around $20k on the market. Its ok, It has a cap, decent on gas, I maintained it and owned it since day 1. I know how i treated it and i know what ive done with it. Its not very comfortable bring a crew with it and you cant put a deck on it.

I found a 2012 Ram 2500 5.7 hemi 4x4 crew cab, 6.5' box outdoorsman for $9,999. it has over 400,000 km on it (odometer reads 169,000, maybe rebuilt engine who knows?)

The dealer is willing to pay me 6k cash in trade for the ram.

plus trading a 5 year newer truck with 100k miles on it for one with 250k miles on it doesn't make sense to me at all. You'd be better off selling your truck for the 20k and then looking in that price range if you really want to change it up. Youll get a lot better truck for that extra 10k you shell out.

Get a full size truck but sell your truck/trade in your truck for at least something with similar miles or less.

Do not get that Ram. It is extremely likely you will have issue after issue with a vehicle that old, especially coming from an unknown owner.

I get that, its not like the canyon is fault free. constantly worried about the transmission deciding to quit towing boats and other toys.


5 year newer 100k miles truck that can handle 1400lbs vs 250k (maybe new motor and trans) that can handle 2500 and 6k for a deck.

a 1500 cant take two sleds. in BC people get pulled over for running two sleds in a 1500. 2500s just hold value better and im not willing to take on a monthly payment for now.



Its not my only car and my daily commute is like 2 miles. come on there has to be someone who thinks this is a good idea.

Do not get a 2500 with a 5.7 in it. The 5.7 is a good motor just not in a 3/4 ton.

So did you buy the Ram? I’ll never understand the mentality of snowmobiles buying a 3/4 ton just to carry sleds that with a trailer could be pulled with most suvs but that’s just me.

Yea I got it.

I used to feel the same.

I recently had a trailer tire blowout on the highway. I’m a keener when it comes to maintenance and making sure it was good before I headed out.

The whole experience was just really miserable. And was basically the last straw for me.

next thing is to get to some sled zones you need to go up FSRs. While you can do it with a trailer, the trailer takes a beating and there needs to be a spot to turn it around. Otherwise you need to go to spots that a have a paved road and a parking lot..

most areas that’s ok. I used to live in AB, and a trailer was better. Now I live in Vancouver area and you need to climb up to 1000m before there is snow at all.

All preference brother, im currently in a trx waiting for my 2024 F-450 to be built. I don't tow at all. I just like real trucks, these 1/2 tons are a waste of money. IMO

if your canyon is paid off, use it for your daily, and buy the old rig to build out!
i would call a 2012 cummins brand new !!! keep in mind, 2500 series vehicles get pricy for mechanic work, just check it with a magnifying glass, and a stethoscope first ;p

Just say no to gasser dodge/ram.

If it was diesel I would say trade it, but I'm not a super fan of the Canyon/Colorado. I owned one with the baby Duramax and while it was a very capable little truck I just couldn't handle the interior and some of the minor build quality issues drove me nuts. I had a lot of minor shit that needed to be replaced or repaired under warranty.

Lol I’m far from a liberal. I drive a 3/4 ton Cummins. I was just asking the logic behind going for a dually when a single rear wheel axle would be much better. Especially with a leaf spring truck like a 450.

Hell ya! I had a 14 mega back in the day. Loved it. I currently drive a 22 f-250, I just want the f450 because it has a wide front axle, turning radius is a game changer. All my diesels get a full Carli Pin Top. So it’s gonna ride great regardless of it being a 450. Plus I do have a 44ft toy hauler “it’s in a seasonal site up north” when I bought it 2 years ago the dealer dropped it off at my site for me lol. Let me see if I got a pic of the mega

Lol I wish I could afford Carli pintops. I hear they are amazing. I’m just leveled on a spacer but I have a full coil level to put on it because the spacer makes it ride like a hay wagon. This will be the last Ram I buy though. The alumiduty got me because they won’t rust. I detail my truck every week and do a fluid film coat every fall and my fenders have the Ram cancer already.

What wheels are those? I’m in the market but can’t find anything solid black in an 18 with a decent offset. I like the look of 18s or even 20s with a big tire instead of the trend of big wheels and rubber band tires.

I’ve never liked the ghetto disco wagon shit either. Never understood why people want to make it ride rougher than it already is lol. Method double standards 18’s on 37’s I wanna say +18 offset. On my 17 i have method nv’s and they look better imo

Loving the Ram and the sled life! Ive probably skied more powder in the last two weeks than i have in my life before that combined.

only issue so far is that the heater core is plugged up. Still good enough to defrost, but doesn’t get warm in the truck. Might fix that soon, just got some heated seat covers for now.
