How to Remove an Abandoned Vehicle

Long story short my apartment complex has a parking lot that is filled with abandoned vehicles. I'm tired of looking at them and it's starting to look trashy. Apartment management won't tow them as they have a right not to. It's their property after all and towing would cost them money.

It's mostly trashy cars that are totaled, flat tires, tinted windows, caved in hoods, missing lights...etc. For what we pay they should have these cars long gone..

Any ideas on what I could do to force managements hand to remove them?

Spray paint "Help me" on all sides to get people complaining? Light them on fire? Cut the brake lines and roll them into areas where they block? Kidding...but these scrap heaps need to go.

See if there are any city programs to reduce "blight" in your area and contact them for leads?

Also depending on how bored the local police department is on any given day you could call the non-emergency number and see if the want to run the plate numbers if you think there might be a possible stolen vehicle or a vehicle with a bunch of fines on it that could be a target for impoundment.

We tried this first but they say it's private property so it's on the property owner to deal with it. I've looked up the vins on each vehicle and none of them are reported stolen.

I see this as an opportunity. Cars have oil, oil is slippery, slippery can cause you to fall, falling can lead to strange neck pains that require many visits to the doctor and typically settle out of court for large sums of money.

Can they be claimed as the property of the apartment complex after a certain time? If yes, I wonder if they could have a junk yard come pick up the cars and pay the complex for scrap.

You shouldn’t be worrying about someone else’s vehicles parked on private property.


Some folks are just inclined to have car graveyards if they have the room for them. Unless you are willing to risk a felony I’d just deal.

I get that but it's our parking lot and I pay for it. It's not a dump for randoms who don't live here.

Unethical solution: Spray-paint swastikas on all the cars. Everyone in the complex will immediately file complaints.

depending on state, you can acquire abandon assets after a certain amount of time. if you went through the process for all at once it may be easier to do. get a homie with a flat bed and haul multiple at a time to the scrap yard. should be able to get $500 a pop.

the tow companies typically charge the individual the car is registered to and not the complex. If you called several tow companies and over a few weeks they would impound them with out suspecting that they were all abandoned. they likely have better resources to handle asset disposal anyway.

You have to make that lemonade. Sell the cats. Maybe wheels, find out what’s worth $$, part them out while you wait to get everything arranged to sell them for scrap. If they actually belong to someone rightfully, they’ll stop leaving them there once parts start disappearing

Take off everything valuable and sell it online (Catalytic Converters sell for quite a bit due to precious metals)... Take advantage of the free money.
