Moving out of Utah

Yes, I went further west from Salt Lake to find love with @OregonDead , who I met on this website.

Things are going great! Wherever he is is my favorite place.

I started volunteering for fun community events when I made the move to a new state, and it was a good way to put myself out there, meet inclusive people, and form a supportive network. Much less drama than making friends haunting the bar. Would recommend.

Real ass advice:
If it's your first time moving out of state for a new job, it can be daunting. If your new job is a ton of pressure, don't get your emotions mixed up into thinking that you're trapped or that your life direction hinges on your first out of state job. It's America, you can always work and make money anywhere.

Depending on what city, Virginia and Michigan could be very different from what you are used to in Utah. I've spent a good amount of time in each and they aren't as unique as Utah.

Moved from CO to WA about 6 years ago now so I can kinda speak to this. Biggest difference is the winter weather. If you can't handle rainy/dark you won't like it, a few of the friends I met here have already moved south for the longer days and sun. I'm not as bothered by it but you have to be super on top of your mental and social health, it's way too easy to shut yourself in your house up here. Also be ready to ski in the rain sometimes, it's not ideal but it absolutely sucks if you're not prepared.

2nd difference is the people. You won't see many baggy fits or NS stickers. The cities (and ski areas) have a strong tech worker presence. Think arcteryx, sprinter vans, and lots of barely trained dogs but not as many shredders that love skiing in the same way people in CO (or UT) do. Not to say that you won't meet chill people to ski with, just that it's harder and the culture is a lot more generally outdoorsy than ski focused.

I will say that there are a lot of positives to living in WA. First and foremost you'll earn/save more money. I've found that it's way easier to reduce my cost of living (roommates, costco, transit, etc.) here than it was to wait around for a living wage in CO. You'll also meet more genuine friends, IMO a lot of CO skiers moved there to live a life they saw in some corny tiktok video and had a hard time getting over themselves. Not having to sort through dozens of out of touch wooks to find ski friends has been super refreshing.

TLDR the ski culture in WA is less active and the weather might be shit, but at least you'll have more financial stability and see fewer white people with dreads.

This. Definitely is the best worded reply and basically explains why Colorado isn't on the list. I've considered it but I get the impression that a lot of CO culture is very surface level and trend driven. As someone who's a big introvert and also with a learning difference, I don't think I'd be all that welcome in the state next door. If I get an offer, WA is on the list because I'm originally from the west coast. I'm very interested in your assessment of the people in WA vs. CO because I have acceptance letters from a few grad schools in CO but I think I might not find belonging in the culture. I actually despise the heat and adore the rain (just not skiing in it lol). Also how's the job market over there?

really depends on the industry. construction, marine/transportation, service, etc. are all pretty easy to get a foot in because of how fast the population is growing, pays well too. tech/engineering/design is oversaturated as fuck and i would strongly recommend against moving here to work in that field without a job offer in hand

Could move to Michigan, Grand Rapids is a lot like SLC, just swap Mormons for dutch reformers. Boise is like SLC lite. We got skiing nearby, just not as good. We got Mormons, but they're slightly more chill. And we got Republicans, some are spicy.

Salt Lake was a great place to spend my 20s. Thoroughly enjoyed living there. Crowds got to be more than I could handle though and I moved away. I absolutely love the wasatch and the proximity to the desert. I really wish it wasn't so crowded. I think I couldn't have settled down there.

If you really despise the heat, I'd strongly recommend visiting VA beach in the summer before you commit to living there. Feels like 100*F at 100% humidity 2-3 months of the year. On the bright side, there's more stuff to do than you can shake a stick at, large young population via military, pretty nice area overall, vibe is on the busy/bustling side. Closest skiing is 4 hours away.

Western VA is far less developed, way less to do, but has mountains. Much chiller, quieter vibe. Liberty Snowflex guarantees year-round skiing on plastic. Not ideal, but I've heard their park is pretty fun. Massanutten or Winterplace probably be your local for real skiing.

I've lived in both of these areas and I'm trying to move to the northeast if that tells you anything.

Skiing in New Hampshire will have you really appreciate it when the snow is good and learning to ski on ice will probably make you a better skier overall. Lots of good tech and finance jobs in/around Boston and there are a lot of active people in other activities (biking, skiing, climbing, sailing, etc) to kind of make up for the slightly shorter season. It's pretty easy to have enough hobbies to not get super caught up missing skiing til at least October. +1 for living near the ocean regardless of which coast it is.

New Hampshire is dope as fuck and objectively has the most beautiful autumn in the country. There is sick terrain if you're hungry and you will probably meet some hardos if that's your crowd. A ton of resorts within a couple hours that are super sick, plus no sales tax
