I may be taking a job in the Sheboygan area and want to know what the skiing and such is like. We are not 100% decided yet but we are checking all our options so if you live or have lived in Wisconsin, what do I need to know?
Ayyy hell yea! Wisco is actually pretty cool, skiing is okay, not too much in terms of skiing over on the east shore…. Granite peak is kinda the top spot, it’s my local so can’t complain on that.. about 2-3 hours from Sheboygan, which is a super cool lil town with a great art scene. Best part about Wisconsin is the access to the UP of Michigan where you rly get good skiing. Most people here are pretty chill, you get a few rednecks and meth heads but you kinda get that anywhere tbh. Not outrageously expensive state to live in which is cool too.
id def recommend Wisconsin, there’s a whole lotta cool stuff up here to check out, underrated ass state.
wisconsin is wack but they the king of kwik trips and culvers which are both cool. best part about wisconsin is youre only a day's drive from mount bohemiaaaaaa (best skiing east of the rockies)

Sheboygan is actually a super nice town on Lake Michigan- if you’ve seen “Surf’s Up” it’s actually where Chicken Joe is from lol.
In terms of skiing- there are some insane hills in Wisconsin: Granite Peak, Tyrol, and Trollhaugen obviously. Only thing is you ain’t gonna be by any of them. There are some fun little mom and pop hills scattered all over the state, and you’d be able to do weekend trips to Mount Bohemia which has amazing pow and terrain for the Midwest.
But I mean shit dude you’ll have a blast. Lake life is so fun in the summer. There is nothing better than grilling up some brats and having a beer by the water. Lake Michigan also has surfing if that’s your vibe. Even without great skiing there’s a lot of fun to be had- like fr, summers on Lake Michigan are so fun. You won’t be bored.
I practically live in WI as I'm only a few miles from the border.
It's Full of cheese curds and Packers fans haha. Avoid Wisconsin Dells during the summer unless you actually want to visit there.
It's not all flat. There's a nice hilly section on I 94 that isn't boring when I'm driving home to IL to visit family. Also the gnarly terrain of Mt bohemia. I haven't been there yet but @Dlonetti can tell you all about it.
Brutally cold winters and hot humid summers.
As others have mentioned Mt Bohemia, Tyrol basin, Trollhaugen, Granite Peak are the hot ski spots. If you move here this winter you gotta make it to Trollhaugen and let me know !
My grandma used to live on the shore in belgium which is right near sheboygan. We still have the house in the family so I go through there in the summer sometimes to visit. One thing to know is if you're thinking of climbing the 500 ft smokestacks at the power plant, they have really good security. Cool city though. skiing will be fun for the first day
I've been in Hudson for 3 years now. It's on the opposite side of the state as Sheboygan but its not bad around here. Afton and Welch are south of me right over the border in MN. Troll is 25 miles north of me. Had a pass at Afton the last two years and probably getting one at Welch this year.
The boat/river scene is pretty huge here. The desire to buy a turbo'd jetski has been growing on me.
The cost of living isn't too bad around me but it's going up as people continue to abandon the metro areas to the west.
A lot of people aren't fans of rural WI but I prefer it. I'm less than a mile from the border of MN and I pretty much only go over there for car stuff, costco and the occasional house/techno show near the cities.
Spent a decent chunk of time tooling around and camping/hiking in northern Wisco this past summer. It may not have mountains, but it's definetly still the great outdoors.
If you're in Rhinelander you're right by the Northern Highland State Forest. 100s of beautiful and pretty empty lakes and hilly forest areas to camp in, fish in, hunt in, boat in etc. etc.
You'll also be within around 2 hours from both Lake Superior and Lake Michigan and super cool areas like the Apostle Islands and the Porcupine Mountains.
Seems like life revolves around the lakes and the outdoors over there, just in a bit different of a way than out west.
Midwest is not bad. States like Wisco and Michigan in the North or UP are incredible and have tons of places to camp and check-out. Yeah, its not going to be like outwest as Lonely put it. But I feel you. I re-located back to Mid-Michigan myself and had similar feelings/worries. It's apples to oranges honestly. Midwest summers near the great lakes are incredible and in some ways better than some beach trips out to California or Florida. I love going to the west coast of MI in the summer. The beach towns along the coast make you forget youre in the US, let alone the Midwest. Its surreal. And everyone is very down to earth and welcomming.
Cheaper Cost of living thats for sure. You can definitely get way more bang for your buck in terms of buying property if thats also what you're interested in too. I highly recommend the midwest to people who own or enjoy motorized toys too. There's lots of access and trails for dirtbikes/OHVs throughout the midwest and tons of land to ride.

Yep, it was like Spring Break every weekend there. Then we'd go down to Madison for the weekend and it would be even crazier. On weekends when we were home in Appleton it would only continue, just a way a life in those areas.
Was in Wasau for work a couple months ago didn't look like the worst place to be for a skier because the local hill wasn't that small and had 800 ft of vert. Obviously I wouldn't want to drive 4 hours from Chicago to ski that but if I lived 10 mins away it would most certainly play especially at night.
Drinking your face off, golfing every day outside the winter, and crushing curds and steaks probably isn't that bad.
The steaks I had in Chicago last week were amazing. 16 oz filets at a BYOB place by Wrigley Field was just absolutely the best.

Edit: Wanted to add a bit about the outdoor culture up there from a visitors perspective. Seems that a bit was said up above as well. People don't seem to have the same get "after it" mindset as some do out west, but there is outdoor culture for sure. More so in wake-surfing etc. You should dive into surfing the Great Lakes if you do move. We went into a Wisconsin Surf shop, which was a trip.

I LOVE THAT PART OF WI!!!!!! Oh my god, growing up we would go to Sheboygan for bike races and to sail home to the Kenosha Yacht Club.

LonelyYeah we do NOT consider Madison part of the Midwest. It's California without the California things in Wisconsin
or lake geneva tbh both places my parents and grandparents lived. Madison is like the seattle or boulder of the midwest and Lake geneva is the hamptons of chicago or canidaugua. love the lake tho, just doesn’t feel like the rest of wisconsin. even Great grandma and grandpas land on lake michagan was cool as a young young. Felt like real wisconsin with old dirt roads and small towns and bars. Grandpa Bob would take us out salomon fishing on his boat. the dunes near their house were gorgeous too. Pretty sure my dad, his brother and cousins donated most of it to the DNR besides the Lake house and docks, and uncle lee‘s cabin. Last time we were there was winter of like 21 i wanna say
Wisconsin is awesome,...........The people that ski here really love to ski, Granite Peak is okay, I prefer Whitecap, Camp 10 or the UP,.....Porkies and Bohemia are worth the drive,...
