Potentially will be attending SLU and it’s about 2hrs from the face. Skied there with family on a weekday but was wondering if there’s actually a scene there on weekends? Will there be with the new parks setup? Or would it be worth it to drive the same distance/time to somewhere else near Montreal? I loved Williams and UVM but both r insanely expensive and i’ll be getting virtually no merit or financial aid from either. I’d also be able to row at SLU which would give me a lil built in support network. Just wondering the thoughts on skiing cause it’s not the end all be all but it’s a consideration?

Is SLU giving you a crazy scholarship? I've worked with several SLU graduates and while they weren't park skiing people they said there's a fairly active group of skiers. You do also get Titus mountain right there for free right? They seem to at least have some features there.

Not outrageous but way way more than Williams was gonna give and I’ve got interviews for more at SLU. It’s enough to make it reasonable compared to a SUNY, along with the fact i’ve applied to outside scholarships and am waiting for decisions on those.

Believe u basically get a free pass to titus along with know someone grads who rowed there and said a group of rowers car pool to ski slides just about every weekend if conditions allow.

Go where the money comes from students loans will fuck up your life. You can do and go wherever when you graduate. No need to dig yourself 200,000 hole on top of it. You’ll be much more free to do as you please in the long run.

SLU is pretty cool. Some rails have been hot there before. They have a club called the java barn there and get pretty decent music. Titus is pretty small but its local ish. Whiteface is a sick mtn. Just gets icy. Iceface. They dont build a pipe anymore. Have some fun runs if the snows good. I've never hot the slide but they seem socl.

Park is usually pretty good but not sure whos working there these days. Gore is a sick spot and on the same pass as whiteface. A little bit of a drive but good spot.

I know SLU is fairly spendy without scholarships and stuff but if you're getting some $$ toward is seems like a good place. I have some family in canton and had a few friends go there. Only visited. But ridden the mtns in upstate NY.

Snow ridge is a pretty cool spot. Maybe an hour and a half from there. Ridge so not everything funnels back to the base if the lifts aren't all running. Also had a big storm earlier this summer that did some damage.

Upstate NY is chill. Vermont is chill too. Good luck and hopefully you end up somewhere cool

Mad people from SUNY Plattsburgh, Potsdam, Canton, Clarkson, and SLU kids ride Whiteface during the winter. Great way to meet new homies outside of school.


Also a College Ski3 pass is ~$500 before December and gives you access to two other mountains. And the season lasts longer than Titus, but neither ORDA resort has night skiing so Titus is still worth hitting up I guess.

Im going to SLU rn and I'll tell you the ski culture here is alive and well. Just built a pvc rail with some friends behind the hockey rink the other day. During the winter you can find a bunch of different pvc rails set up in various locations around campus and ppl are always hiking them. I live in the Outing Club house which is an on campus house, we lead a ton of trips for students throughout the semester including ski touring trips as well as van loads of students to whiteface and gore. We also sell ski 3 passes to students for around $350 which will allow you to ski at whiteface, gore and belleayre. Additionally Titus mountain is only an hour away and sells cheap tickets on Fridays for college students. The small mountain feel there is super fun and the night skiing scene is awesome and they even have a little park under the lights. Parks at both whiteface and gore are awesome and have everything from small to big features, they get changed a little bit throughout the winter and are always good.
The only downside to the skiing here is that titus is an hour away and both whiteface and gore are over two hours however, there are always people car pooling and I see other students at the mountain every time I go. SLU itself is an awesome school which allows you to anything you want to do. The people here are awesome and all just want to have a good time. If you have any other questions about the skiing here or the school in general id be happy to answer them!

whiteface's park used to be really cool. I heard they are changing it up this year moving it somewhere else tho.

The ice can get pretty bad.

Def a scene. It was the first place i saw an entire crew of 12-17 year olds wearing nothing but harlaut.

It's gone through some waves. Pretty good scene at a couple points. I only rode there maybe 10 times before 2006. Def found some ice in the parks but always had some big jumps and a brick ice pipe.

The Whiteface guys were driving around in a van for some of the usasa contest i reemmber around 2010 plus or minus. They had really good jump tricks/awareness from having consistently decent junps that were pretty big.

Jake and some of those guys would kill it at our events. I remember a few of the events at west a couple of them would podium regularly. I didn't really know Tyler Watson back then but a mutual friend got him to come out for a rail jam at Oak. Dude was sick. Great rider.

He was on park crew and then built a few years before going to Sugarbush. Not sure if he goes back ever anymore.

Def saw a couple years that looked pretty sluggish up there but Whiteface is pretty sick. I wish they would have ended up a park powerhouse. A lot more mtns built big jumps back then but they had then consistently and prety decent. For the east coast they were up there imo.

Hope they have a good season. Such a sick spot. Bryant is doing a really good job at Gore since he took over. Place should be making some moves or at least being fairly dialed for the northeast.

I nostalgia'd a bit sorry lol. Live upstate NY mtns. Jore and whiteface def hold a special place in my heart.

SLU is great, you won't regret going. When I was there there was a group of hardcore skiers that sent it up to Jay Peak every weekend. Those are the kids you wanna hangout with

My older brother went to SLU, joined/lived in the Outing Club, they shredded White Face and Titus, skied backcountry in the Whites and upstate, and then all moved to Jackson Hole together and are now essentially all living in the same neighborhood in Victor ID having kids and shit.

Great folks, ripping skiers, talented outdoorsmen (hunting, climbing, whitewater, sledding, you name it). SLU Outing Club is basically the only reason I ever heard of JH and how I ended up here, so major love to that whole crew some of my fav ppl in the world, amazing friends, and important backcountry mentors.

I ended up at UVM bc of the financial aid and academic scholarship they offered, and ultimately I think a bigger school was a much better fit for me and UVM FST was an incredible crew and a great way for me to level up my skiing, but if the price is right I’d say you can’t go wrong at SLU!
