They will be an out west ski for places like Whistler/ Big Sky, mainly skiing powder. I was wanting to get pivots, but I was worried about the weight for doing tricks and hiking. Thoughts on what to get?
Atomic will tell you to get Strives which are decent, I use the 14s. Pivot 12 or 14 will be fine weight wise, I'd get the 15 only if you plan to use CAST
Pivots suck to clip into in deep snow so I'd look at getting an STH 13 or a Griffon 13 if weight is a worry. Pivots will be handy though if you ever want to run CAST; although my spidey senses tell me there is a new CAST binding coming out next year...
If the thing holding you back from getting pivots is the weight for a short bootpack up A-Z at Big Sky, then just get pivots. I promise you a half hour on the stairmaster and one less beer will help you hike better than shaving off 100 grams off your downhill bindings.
This is the way. If you put Atomic bindings on Atomic skis you will extend the warranty of the skis from like one to 3 years or something... or at least that is what Amer brands used to offer...
