Any skimo bros out here?

Anyone here loves to hike a mountain as fast as they can? Climbing 4000’ in 13 miles in less that 2hrs is fun! Skimo? Ski more!

I got into the sport a couple years ago and its really helped me do more runs in a day, break track faster and with less effort. Every race is a crazy story of endurance and competitors are so friendly! Its like a big get together of the fastest hikers around the area. Im currently 6th in Canada on my first season tour! So the bar of entry isnt very high. Plus they offer a recreational category for those with heavy metal setups.
Yeah, it looks goofy but condencing an entire day of skiing in 2 hours is quite the experience.
BTW, the North American Championship is in Brighton, UT this year and Im thinking about trying it out. Anyones got a sofa I could crash on?

Im the one in the orange Gore-Tex coat.

Had to do this course twice for the full course race at Marmot Basin. Took me 2h45mins for both laps.

I've thought about getting into it but have just spent that time touring instead. It does look like a fun challenge though. I have a buddy who is on the US National team and really loves the sport. He came from a running background and is an absolute tank

I can see the appeal, there's just such a high barrier to entry having to buy an entire super expensive setup that I wouldn't use for anything else.

The price barrier is the worst; like mtb, the most expensive gear will give you a huge advantage. The boots are over a grand, the skis are also a grand, the outwear will set you back another 400$… that is really the only setback I find with skimo. Its a beautiful sport though.
I tried the gear in a real setting. Gotta say, its interesting to maneuver the skis. In shit-fuck conditions, the skis perform admirably! You can actually ski the skis! However, I took them down the steepest lines in 50-60cm of fresh and they were not really usuable. I had to straightline the fuckers to keep momentum but I was almost waist deep the whole time!
Climbing pow was impossible. But climbing a resort on the off season was amazing. It took me 28mins to climb the summit side of Whitewater and did 5 laps before calling it a day.

I joined in 2003. My heart will always be in the park. Nothing is more fun than perfectly cured rails and perfectly cut hits. I love slopestyle and freeride comps but my body cant take the impacts as well as a 18 year old can.
However, my resort doesnt have a park. It has big lines and cliffs that you couldnt possibly fathom. To reach the big lines ya gotta hike to them. Or, you gotta be fit enough to hike out of bounds, build a booter and hit it all in one day. Ya gotta be in a hell of a good shape to do that.
Skimo is another aspect of skiing. It answers the “how fast and effiently can you hike uphill?” Plus, it gives me the endurance needed for the big lines far away from forest service roads.

Skimo taught me how to reach peaks like this. 5miles to get there, 7 miles return with a gain/loss of 6000’. I did it in 5hours last year, alone. The ride was amazing! Thats why I practice skimo.

But like I said, I prefer big booters!

I usually train with a pair of Line Infuence 188 and 4frnt 18 frame bindings. Shit weighs like 50lbs. Then, drop the weight in January.
Carbon skis are amazing to hike in.

Man this makes trail running seem like a vacation, tried trudging through deep doo doo outer bounds with an absolute snow shaman and that kicked my butt (strapped in sidesteps for the win learned the hard way for a J3RR-E)

Dynafits skimo binding were on super sale few years ago and bunch of fuckin idiots bought them not knowing what they were. I mounted so many of them to massive 118 underfoot powder skis

But they all "knew what they were doing"

You see that A LOT in the Kootenays. People will complain that their JJs carbon on Dynafit Superlights are absolute shit while sporting a pro Hoji boot. However, they will only ski lifts and nothing harder than a blue square.

I saw people trying to skin up whitewater with fixed bindings. Its not a rare occurence.

Honestly seems like a super fun sport to get into. As easy as it is to make fun of how dorky it looks, its kinda a rad sport, basically the winter version of mountain running. If I lived in a place with more of a skimo scene I would forsure get a setup and start signing up for races.

Maybe I'm just unlucky but I've gotten bad vibes from the skimo crowd... I've done a few low-key uphill contests and just because my kit doesn't look like Killian Jornet I get all kinds of looks/comments like wtf are you doing here

Regular backcountry skiing is great fun though and I like trying to keep up with my local 60 year old bros

Are you living in Europe? That may explain the attitude. Skimo races are super chill in Canada.

I found skimo is a lot more like fitting an entire day of skiing in the backcountry in a couple hours. It helps me know, at 100%, how fast I travel and for how long so I can plan bigger projects to ski.
