Unnat or Nat trick debate

On the phone with mr George Brown and ms Rylie Warnick right now, bringing forth a very interesting and classic debate. Maybe this has been made before but I used search bar and couldn't find anything previously made covering this specific of a topic.

so what is UNNATURAL (for a rail trick specifically):


1. Calling it unnatty if you get on with your unnatural sliding foot first, then doing the trick (say, kfed), EVEN THOUGH that's the easiest way for you to do it

2. Doesn't matter what what you get on first, whatever is more difficult for you is your unnatural version of the trick.

for example my natural way of sliding rails is RFF, but doing an Ellen or a kfed for me is tenfold easier if I start it out LFF and then throw the swap n 270. IMO this is the textbook definition of an unnatural trick, but if I'm playing a game of slvsh with someone and unnatty is called, I'm doing it whatever way is more difficult for me.

My definition of unatty is sliding the rail with the non preferred foot, even if it's easier doing swaps. I find the initial commitment of jumping on the rail with the unatty foot to be the most difficult part.

As ms Rylie Warnick, my nat slide is RFF and even though some stuff is easier as LFF, it’s still unnattertin. Imagine a slvsh game and they’re trying to figure out what is unnat for someone the other way is so complicated. #cancelgeorgebrownhedoesntnowwhatunnatis

Ms Warnick I’m going to have to disagree. While I understand your point of view, I must insist that your UN is simply the harder way to do a trick. For me, it is easier to just spin left on a rail no matter what foot I am sliding. I struggle way more on left foot backswaps than right foot ones, even though I am left foot natural. As for slvsh games, you just have to trust the honor system. Whichever way is easier is your natural way to do a trick no matter what foot you slide first.

When I did training to be a coach we were instructed to not refer to anything as 'unnatural' so as not to set it up as being more difficult which could contribute to mental block for kids. So I just say left and right.
As for slvsh games, I just talk it out with the opponent before the game to identify any hang ups either person might have and I still just call left or right.

I also know 2 guys that rodeo/bio the other way than they normally spin, so this can happen to jump tricks too in rare cases lol

I agree with what you're getting at but referring to what's easiest is way too subjective and makes every conversation about tricks a headache.

I think it makes more sense to be consistent and have it as when you land unnat foot forward, that’s what I’ve always went with.


The other way makes hella sense too though, good debate.

I prefer calling it unnat when the trick is harder for me that way. Just feels fair tbh. For example my b4s are harder on my natty foot (because of the way i spin) so I would call unnat b4 even if its my good foot. Otherwise I'd feel like cheating if I called my easier b4 "unnat"

for me unatty, and natty only apply when the trick involves one spin direction... as in jump tricks, and simple rail tricks that do not involve combos.

as for tech rail tricks, I just call em opposite, if im doing them both ways. If someone is calling unnat/opposite/right/left doing a combo type rail trick in a slush game, I wanna see them call and execute the other direction of that trick as well.

I agree that starting your unnatural foot forward is unnat, But I am RFF, and I naturally spin left, so when I do a left 270 on to a rail I land with my LFF. And i consider that a natural 270 on because it is way easier then doing a right 270 on. Although this kinda cracks a hole in the 1st explanation.

Doing it the way skateboarders do makes the most sense to me. If RFF slide is natural then all tricks that start LFF are unnatty. Same as how some skaters can do certain switch tricks better than regular.

Also having a different forward and switch spin direction is a thing, change my mind

What about calling one oppo (as in opposite foot forward first) and the other unnat (unnatural direction of trick). For example, say right foot forward/left spin are dominant. K fed right foot forward would be unnatty and K fed left foot forward would be oppo foot. idk maybe that's too complicated

Thanks dog. I’m just really committed to having smooth simple style, and it def has nothing to do with the fact that I can only do like 3 rail tricks

There is no such thing as unnatural. There is only right and left. Is there something wrong with your body thats stopping you from doing it one way? no youve just practiced it more/done more repetitions one of the ways and are more comfortable.

I’ve always just called putting the harder foot forward oppo regardless of future swaps, unless you spin on at which point I just use nat/unnat and forget about oppo/regular

I was heavy on the foot being dominant for nat / unnat, but the I realized I’m fully left spinning dominant. I’m right foot forward, left foot switch, left spin. I cannot hit a rail switch with my right foot at all.

I’ll just start calling things left & right.

I call it unnat if it’s hopping on left foot first, even though as you say some tricks are easier going on unnat. It’s just to make it more practical.

What ever way more comfortable is your natural. If it’s easier it’s more natural. Also easy solution just call which foot is forward to start the trick

we really fucked up with the whole natural/unnatural thing. not a very good system and "unnatty" is a horrible attempt at making a short word that rolls off the tongue

i think i'm gonna try to incept everyone and get "oppo" to catch on at least. or just righty/lefty

This might be a smooth brain take, but I think you gotta do it spinning left on as natural and the other way unnatural. It might be way too much to always be figuring which foot is forward on every clip and calling "nat" or "unnat" (although I guess that skaters will track that pretty solidly for switch and unswitch 🤷🏻‍♂️ lol). Plus, spinning 450 your unnat way is probably way more difficult than landing nat on the rail (unless you are going to lock on for a beast mode rail) , but I am no rail wizard to be fair

It’s a lot easier to type and say. Like someone said above tho I think hardway is a better name + it sounds cooler and is self explanatory
