Headlamps for skiing

Not to sure on specific brands and all dat but definitely go for something with long lasting battery if ur touring multi day, if u have a portable solar panel get a headlamp that can be usb charged in case ur batteries die to the cold or something like that, lots of Lumens is definitely something u should prioritize too since then u can use it in ur tent and see all around u at night

I currently own several headlamps and the Petzl Actik is by far the best IMO

I fuck with the black diamond headlamps, those have been super well made in my experience. Also if you’re using them for skiing I’d highly recommend getting ones that use AAA batteries rather than rechargeable, much easier to bring a bag of spare batteries than worry about recharging while in the backcountry.

I was recommended the petzl nao on here a couple seasons ago and I love it. Pricey but totally worth it. Having the battery pack on the back is so huge, the balance of the weight really matters. I used it for tree skiing at Brighton and it totally worked.

no recommendations on what specific headlamp to use, but one thing a local ski patroller does that I've been meaning to copy is modifying his headlamps to attach to a gopro mount, which I think is a genius idea

YES! Actik is great i use it for skiing and mountaineering, amazing value for the area that is getting lit up

I’ve been using the biolite 800 pro for night touring. Works great, plenty of light for night skiing, especially in the 30 second burst mode. Fits great over a helmet.

keep in mind when you’re looking at headlamps for night touring that run time is less important than you’d think. Most nights there’s enough ambient light to walk uphill with the headlamp on an extremely low setting or completely off. Youll only need to run it at the highest setting when you’re actually skiing downhill.

also be aware that headlamps are useless if it’s nuking out.. a super bright headlight will illuminate all of the snow a few feet in front of your face and make it impossible to see where you’re going. Similar effect to when they hit hyperspace in the millennium falcon lol

Did a couple tours last season that ran a bit later in the evening than I would've liked. More than once I've resorted to using my phone flashlight which I've realized needs to stop.
