What pass are you getting this year?

epic college pass. heading to park city during sundance, gunna be a nightmare.

Haha yeah I go to heavenly every other year or so, at which point I’m reminded why I don’t got there

betzlol my man not even mentioning heavenly. I can't really stand heavenly anymore. I'd go there for a ski trip because the hotels are relatively cheap, but every single time I get fucked up by some heavenly bullshit (can't open their lifts, wind and lightning holds, shitshow of jerries and incomplete terrain). Northstar at least has the park, good operations, express lifts and decent enough skiers. Heavenly on paper has it all, but in reality the stars have to align for me to have a legitimate good day there.

And yeah, don't really need to say- kirkwood is the only reason I have the pass. One of my favorite places in the world. Only gets crowded on some pow days for chair 6/10 or spring days you have to wait like 2 minutes for sunrise. Most waiting is on the slow lifts. Can't really complain though. Terrain is amazing.

Amusing how many people are getting the epic pass. Imo not worse than getting an ikon, Palisades is too crowded, sugar bowl too expensive and Sierra at Tahoe too limited.

And KWood is too far... it's the Tahoe conundrum.

I bought my Cypress Mountain pass like last April? They sell a pass between the top-tier and mid-tier but it's super limited so you have to buy quickly. It's only blacked out between Xmas and New Year's Day, otherwise all day and all night from mid November to mid April, I'm ready to go.

Guessing you're in Vancouver? Must be nice having a place a half hour away. My drive is just under 3 hrs to kwood and it's one of the closest to the east bay. Trying to live closer some day..

Good and correct guess. Cypress is about 40 minutes without traffic but I used to live in the South Bay...3:15-3:30 without traffic to Palisades, probably 15 minutes less to Kirkwood but I didn't get there too much over the last few years. It's an awesome mountain but not tremendous for teaching kids to ski. We had epic passes for two years before the Ikon was created and then went that route for Squaw/Palisades and Alpine Meadows.

Hard disagree honestly. Timber Creek is amazing for little kids. I haven't seen so stoked lil shredders at any other mountain I've been at. I was riding the lift one time with a group of kids and it was the cutest thing. One of them was like.. should we wide the tewwain pawk? Or Ditch of doom? Other kid was like DOD! DOD! Another was like no, TOT! (trench of terror). Lol.

But on that same note I was at Whistler and it struck me how bad it was for beginners. Ok sure every lift has a green run, but really only emerald chair was out of the way and actually a good learner zone. Every other one was so intermingled with better skiers flying by that it hardly felt like it was really for beginners. More for less than experienced skiers to be able to go to the top then ski down badly. And it was so weird to see a whistler kids meeting point at the top of 7th heaven lol.

Whistler is a weird setup but there are some amazing runs/bowls/zones.

My kids learned at Boreal, Bachelor, Northstar, Heavenly, and Alpine I guess... they're solid intermediates, the elder can get down most things and is switching over to the Darkside (snowboarding lol)

I mean I loved whistler for me, but it's a good example of just because the run is green doesn't mean it's good for learning. Shit I don't think any beginner should be skiing for like 5 miles straight no matter the pitch. I learned at Boreal too, also Diamond peak and Dodge ridge. I took my brother who has never been skiing to Kirkwood. The progression for a beginner there is actually really good. Bunny > graduation (run) > timber creek > chair 5 > chair 2 > backside, then chair 11 then 6 then 10. In that order, depending on experience. They won't get stuck on a 5 mile run, they are short and sweet but there is always a notch up in difficulty. I think the issues people have with Kirkwood for beginners or especially intermediates, is wanting to see more of the mountain too early. You can't expect there always to be an easy way down like at other resorts. I see way too many people zig zagging down upper Zachary when they really should be sticking with Timber Creek or solitude. I guess there's also people who will go up 10 when they have no business going up it, somehow they ignore every warning I guess lol. I've been up there when it's 100% iced out moguls. If you fall, you're going to have a long bumpy ride ahead of you. But you ignored all warnings (like the big ass skull and crossbones literally in the middle of the lift line), the fact all of the runs are listed as double black, and probably a warning from the lifty too.

My favorite is when people come to visit me and ski keystone for the first time as beginners. Their main beginner run is a 3.5 mile green that goes from Top to base. Its that or the bunny hill. Keystone is an awesome resort for Powder in the trees and hood park laps but not beginners.

The traffic will suck, but the mountain is usually not crowded during sundance, most people are in town for the festival and the lodging around that time is insanely expensive which means less tourists.

I do like eldora. It’s a nice change of pace from the other ikon resorts in surrounding area. It’s tiny in comparison but got a lot of heart. I always enjoy it,
