skiP.E.I.I wouldn't grind it down and put p-tex over it, the p-tex will never stay in. They should have epoxied a piece of base material in, but not every shop has that on hand and it's a more in-depth and expensive process that takes some specialty tools and materials. Since there's already epoxy in the hole, that's going to be difficult to remove without damaging the fiberglass it's attached to. All that being said, I've skiied multiple seasons on skis with a similar repair and it's been fine. The ski will certainly run a little slower but it will be basically imperceptible unless you spend a lot of time on flat bases on groomed snow, and even then it's minor.
Sucks that happened but I would move on and use those as rock skis if you can afford to get a new pair. There are still some good deals on past season skis kicking around.

what about buying some black pigment and adding a layer of black epoxy over this? It’s a cover up, but I find it hard to be satisfied with a ski that looks as if it was never fixed.
skiP.E.I.Yeah you could try that, imo it's not worth the time and effort it would take to make it look really clean, but if you're into repairs and tinting epoxy it could be a fun project. You could even tint it blue or something to match the graphic. Another thing, the epoxy is harder than the p-tex around it so if the skis see a lot more use, the patch will end up being a bit proud of the the base from wear.

runforlove2024You're positive it was epoxy and not clear base material? I wouldn't bother. It's a small spot and will only be asthetics. If they really epoxied it, that's ridiculous to pay for.

cgladI questioned the repair, and they told me it was too big to base weld, so they used only epoxy. They did this after I specifically told them not to, and that I wanted base. FaunaSkisYou're right to rough up the surface if you want to put anything over the top of it. What you should be putting over the top is black Metalgrip, its a copolymer of p-tex and epoxy resin so it will have better hold than just straight epoxy but will also have the slipperyness of p-tex. Good ski shops should have it, and it might have been clear metal grip they put over the core shot originally rather than regular epoxy.
it should be left for at least 24 hours after application then base planed, and scraped flat with a sharp metal scraper to the base and then ground smooth. It won't hold forever but if done right it should hold for a much longer time than just p-tex for a gouge that deep.
Dan-Manpaying for ski repairs is a waste of money. shoulda just filled it with epoxy & let er rip!
save that money for more skis.
