Maybe I'm just old now, and I legitimately don't know how people learn about new music anymore.

Yeah, I know there's spotify, but when I'm on there, I generally just listen to playlists that are made for me based on what I listen to - which is all 80s metal, 90s punk, and 2000s alternative. It never really plays much that's new, and when it does, it sounds like a rip-off... such as Royal Blood - who pretty much is just a wannabe Black Keys. Maybe I just don't know how to use spotify correctly, or I'm hyper critical. I dunno.

back in my day (ok boomer) I had terrestrial radio as my chief source of new music, but that's generally gone the way of the dodo for better or for worse. I learned about new bands all the time from the few DJ hours that I would accidentally tune into, and discover new shit that doesnt get played on the regular rotations... Some days were 'meh' and some days were 'oh shit that sounds cool!'

How do you guys discover new music? The stuff thats actually good and not just the top-40 type shit that's sold to us by whatever hollywood style hype there is out there.

Black Keys turned into shit so if it's wannabe based on earlier stuff that sounds pretty good tbh

Do you use the "go to radio" feature on the artists page? If not try that, it is sort of helpful.

i usually just go in an band/artist i like and then the other recommended bands in their profile and sample some of the recommended stuff and then repeat over and over again and just end up going down rabbit holes

I mindlessly scroll TikTok for hours on end listening to s l o w e d + r e v e r b music and also sped up songs and sometimes sigma edit music and then I just screen record those tiktoks to listen to them later 👍

Youtube has been pretty good at suggesting stuff I like. I discovered Bad Wolves when listening to system of a down. YT algorithm does suck but it does offer a good suggestion from time to time.

Now that you are older and have more experience, all art is derivative these days. Is a copy of a copy of a shitty copy. Almost all movies and TV shows are nothing but member berries and all pop music is distorted bass with 3 or 4 words on repeat.

Its not about the art, its about the fame and fortune and how much promoters, producers and influencers will make.

On a real note I find music through studying album reviews and reading what bands influence appears in the band I like's music. It is a pain because it isn't easy but if you like niche stuff like me that's the only way really, because Spotify suggestions are based off of genre and genres in that algorithm are way too broad

I like to just go down rabbit holes on youtube. I watch all the music videos which is added fun and just keep adding songs to the queue. I also download my favorites with youtube to mp3. It can be pretty enjoyable and you start to find new genres and artists the deeper you go.

Bandcamp; find a few labels you like and just go into their artist list, look at records you like and click through to other people who bought the record’s profiles and check out their libraries.

compared to 2009 when most edits consisted of biggie remixes, most edits nowadays has so much good (and different) music, you will find something. crews like child labor,zootspace,dustbox(snowboard) and skate vids from companies like baker, supreme and fa all use phenomenal music.

i’m a sucker for finding obscure bands. i surf youtube a lot because you’ll find so many random bands that are amazing but have zero presence online or irl. spotify’s “more of this” section is probably most people’s method to finding new music.
